Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a Puma to convert into a rally car over summer and go rallying with some friends. I've always liked the Ford Puma, I'm fairly certain there was an FRP where I lived which I used to see every day as a kid on the way to school, so I guess this is pretty poetic

I'm not too fussy in all honesty - 1.4 or 1.7, either will do, and I'm fine with taking a little more of a rusty example or one thats had an MOT failure maybe, etc. Could try and breathe some new life into it!

In terms of funds to do it, I'm trying to keep it to a reasonable budget, so ideally I need something thats not gonna set me back more than maybe £1200? However if it's a very mechanically healthy car I'm willing to go higher

I know it's probably a bit jarring knowing that if I was to buy your car that it's gonna be converted into a rally car, but rest assured it'll be in good hands - that I can promise. I'm planning on keeping all the interior etc which is taken out so that, if needs be, it can be returned back to it's original spec - gives someone else the chance to have the Puma experience when/if we move to a new car

I'm based around the Northumberland area in Newcastle, but willing to travel some distance - worst comes to the worst I should be able to afford a delivery service on the car if it is quite far away.

Any questions please don't hesitate to ask! Will be open to negotiations - this is a dream I really want to make a reality, I think it'd be awesome. That's all, thank you :)

(This is my first time posting so I may have missed something... let me know if I have!)

Good luck, hope you can find a suitable car. My friend Kevin Leek uses a Puma for Targa rallies, he's on his 2nd. one, the first had terminal rust, so that's something to be aware of.
Prices are all over the place, there is usually quite a few on Facebook marketplace and specific Puma selling groups.

Thank you! I've seen a few on FB marketplace but they're either a bit too expensive or they're literal rust buckets, hoping for a bit more luck here...

I found my last one on eBay, went to view it and found it was very solid underneath, they put it over and inspection pit, so made an offer that was accepted, the other 2 were just chance encounters, one was me just admiring the car in a supermarket car park.

Sounds good to me. I have a Puma Thunder that has the 1.7 engine and a few other goodies. It has done 81k miles and passed its MOT a week before Easter and is not rusty. I am looking for a bit more than £1200 but the car has had new Cambelt and Water pump, New Fuel Pump and new bushes to the front suspension.I am sure you could replace the seats with proper Rally seats and the leather interior could be sold on. I am near Coventry Email is [email protected] I did quite a bit of rallying when I was young and I know a Puma has vast properties that you need

Hi i have a Puma black 1.7 . 2001 .Just failed MOT on emissions, it is going back into the garage on Monday 13th to see if they can fix it, Bodywork is sound, a couple miner rust spots and general wear and tear, Just over 60K on the clock, I am in Essex Thurrock area, Email, [email protected] if interested.

Are you interested, if not please let me know. I did forget to tell you that it had a new set of tyres (Avons, which are incredible on tarmac) and they have only done about 5K since fitted.

Hi! Sorry I took a while, I've just been very busy, my apologies

I had a look at your advert for it, it looks incredible, but the only issue I have is that I don't know if I can afford it if I was to buy the car for that price, and it's definitely worth a lot more than what I can offer you, would hate to low ball you.

If anything changes on that front in time I will definitely let you know!

Hi!

Sounds like a tidy car generally - only issue is the logistics of getting a car back from Essex, but I'm sure I can work that out - would you mind sending some pictures through if I email you?

OK just don't forget me. Also be careful about buying a car that is riusty. It can cost an awful lot of money to get right. If you want someone to 'bounce information' on just email me. I am not trying to sell you mine I just want to help you get a rally car and enjoy it.

Sorry it's me again. If you are not stuck on a Puma you could consider an MG ZR. They make a really good rally car and there may be more around than a Puma.

Ahhh that's really nice, appreciate that man :)

Also, I did have a look at the MG ZR - drove it loads on some of the classic Colin McRae rally's as a kid so I remembered it and had a look, but I found the Puma to be reasonably cheap to prep in comparison (plus it looks really cool!)

This ZR is used locally for rallying, I'm told it's goes really well, but I think a Puma is a better car, I'm biased of course.
My friend Kevin Leek does Targa rallies in his, as well as Chris Jones locally, as well as quite a few nationally. Puma's are also quite popular for auto tests, the Chairman of Witney Motor club uses one.

I can echo what John Woodward has said. The Zr / Rover 25 goes well, I had one as my first rally car, but in standard form alone the puma beats them hands down for handling and acceleration. The Zr 160 is comparable but is very rare and pricey so don't even look for that.

I am still working on my Puma build and currently figuring out suspension set up after having adjustable coilovers fitted. My Puma was so low at the front my sump guard (which is a must have) it was taking a battering on road rallies. Have raised the car 20mm, so hoping that issue has gone now.

Are you building yours yourself? What sort of rallying were you planning (targas/road rallies or stage)?

I'm planning on doing it myself yeah, there's more than enough parts for it. I'm planning on doing stage rallying, I've always wanted to give those a go - my dad used to do them as well and he was pretty good in the 80s going off of old timing sheets - he had a Mk2 Escort before he got a Sierra 3 door shell he never finished. Rusting in a field somewhere, so i guess its fitting im continuing the Ford tradition somewhat
