does any one know the law on changing the odometre. I'll just bought a puma i believed to have done 58000. After checking the recepts it turns out it had a new engine after130000 and the odometre was changed at the same time. As u can image i',m a bit peaved and worried about the other parts of the car. E.g gearbox clutch, suspention. I thought it was illegal to change the mileage.

Illegal to change mileage, but not illegal to change odometer, but it should be declared at time of sale i believe.

Mileage shown is mileage on new engine

Not illegal to alter mileage, but it is misrepresentation to pass something off as something that it isn't. Tricky in a private sale, but a dealer has to conform with the terms of the sale of goods act.

So long as it drives ok, I wouldn't worry too much, aside from the fact that it's value will be affected.

What is the situation with the cambelt?

People get too concerned about mileage anyway.... if car and parts have been looked after and maintained it's just a number.

Puma's resale value is becoming negligible anyway unless its a special edition.

If you going to buy a car then got to this address

http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/internet/jsp/ECSID-Internet-Status-Request.jsp

you need the reg number and the latest log book number and you can check the MOT history, try it with your current log book.

As above, mileage does not matter providing the car has been looked after.
There are many cars with over 90k for instance which are in better condition than cars of the same age with 40k on the clock.
Lower mileage doesn't mean less to go wrong.

My bike for example the mileage is completely unknown with no way to verify it. It's a 15 year old Bandit that's had 19 owners (inc me). I've owned it for 18 months now and have no plans to sell it as it does the job as well as one which has a verified mileage / less owners etc.

I would take high mileage thats been looked after and had big things done to it like clutch and belts than low mileage that hasn't had anything done to it.

The arches rust if its sitting on the drive or eating miles on the motorway.

I agree with everything said above. but my concern is that i thought i was buying a car that had done 58000miles.
Now i have a clutch, gearbox, crank shaft and suspention that have all done getting on 200000miles. I any ford i think thats pushing life expecency

tbh they are servicable items that will need changing, apart from the crankshaft, suspension can go on any car at anytime, sods law lol,my puma is on 107,000 original engine, gearbox and clutch etc and drives very well,if you have any concerns why not put it in for a pre mot check and then you will know what the condition of the car is in...
