Re: FRP Duratec Turbo Project!

So after reading this thread, I must admit that it is the most amazing Puma I've ever seen ... a lot of respect :-) Thanks mate, I appreciate the nice comments! I only have a small update but it's a new development that I've made that may be useful for other people running increased power. h...

Re: 2.0 Zetec Turbo - The Yella' Fella'

Zinc your a better man then me, I just skipped to a few summarising bullet points lol! But yeah, as I say, on paper that how it works, but I have 100% noticed a huge difference in not only cornering and acceleration, but on braking too with wider tyres. If I could go back down to 215's and get the s...

Re: 2.0 Zetec Turbo - The Yella' Fella'

If you read the complete post (I know I waffle on a bit) you will see I'm trying to explain the theory of contact patch, not that I agree with it. If I agreed with the theory I wouldn't have fitted wider tyres. Take a read of this page if you have time, it describes what the 'theory' of contact patc...

Re: 2.0 Zetec Turbo - The Yella' Fella'

No don't just order 400lb springs, speak to Gaz and find out what spring rates they use on the m1 focus 2.0, that should give you a good starting point. I can't remember exactly what my spring rates were, 400lbs was just a guess. Your engine weight will be different to mine and with your turbo at th...

Re: 2.0 Zetec Turbo - The Yella' Fella'

I like Gaz because of the damping adjustability, you can set them up almost like a stock set up, and adjusting takes a few mins so I rate them highly. I only have the Gaz GHA, I'd love to try Gaz golds as they are supposed to be better. I find daily driving needs a slightly softer set up then track,...

Lol nah, the first number is parts of air, the second is parts of fuel, so the lower the first number, the higher the fuel content. I see where you are coming from though mate.

Re: 2.0 Zetec Turbo - The Yella' Fella'

Lol mine is never top secret, anything I do on my car is always in the 'Freedom of information act' To increase torque and reduce bhp I run a bigger engine (obviously), but a bit less duration and lift on the cams and run the inlet cam a few degrees more advanced. I've tightened the wastegate ...

Re: 2.0 Zetec Turbo - The Yella' Fella'

Warren has sold the 4x4 cosworth puma as far as I'm aware. There is a mk1 focus RS engined puma running I think around 450-500bhp, we saw it at ford fair however I was told the engine sounded in a bad way so I'm not sure if that's still going. There are 2 other pumas with ridiculous power, the Gould...

Re: 2.0 Zetec Turbo - The Yella' Fella'

Not sure if you know or if I have the wrong end of the stick, but spacers reduce offset not increase it, so and ET30 wheel with a 15mm spacer becomes an ET15 offset. The theory behind wheel width is that by increasing the width, you decrease the length of the footprint. So the contact patch is the s...

Re: 2.0 Zetec Turbo - The Yella' Fella'

I'm on my 4th set of cams now lol, the spec all depends how you like your power delivery, & unfortunately it's not a "1 size fits all so it will be trial and error for you I'd imagine. My ECU has a function to allow gear dependant boost gontrol, but there is no switch for the ECU to know what gear y...

Re: 2.0 Zetec Turbo - The Yella' Fella'

Looks like good progress mate, it's exciting seeing the pistons fitted and engine back in one piece, its well under way now!! I think you've made a good choice on the turbo, as long as you can do progressive boost with gear change, but I think Ryan's suggestion of a GT3071r would have been the perfe...

Re: FRP Duratec Turbo Project!

Oh ok, I thought we were talking about your 4wd puma not the KA! Ok I'm with you now! Yeah I'll try unplugging it and see if it makes a difference, I don't think it will because I've only noticed it since fittin the quaife diff, but then I only fitted the quaife diff when I had more power so it's al...

Re: 2.0 Zetec Turbo - The Yella' Fella'

Wow that's a big ask in a week, I'm sure it can be done but the problems normally occur when you bump into unexpected issues and have to wait on delivery of custom parts! But then I suppose if they have done this before, they will know what's required and hopefully there will be no unexpected issues...

I'm more then happy to discuss these things here as its helpful in the development of my car, so its not hijacking lol. Warren, are you running a standard rear beam with your set up? The only way I could describe the front lower strut is as Jay says, everything just feels tighter. The same way I can...

Re: FRP Duratec Turbo Project!

There is an argument that wider tyres on the same car still has the same contact patch as a narrower tyre, but that's only in paper, in reality I notice a difference in traction with my 235 40 17 tyres, but with the 8j wheels and the wider tyres, I also notice a weight difference, so that's worth ke...

Re: FRP Duratec Turbo Project!

I'm not sure if I'm honest mate, I don't think they are resistance based (although the resistance does fluctuate at the same rate as pulses), I think they are variable reluctance like the crank sensor. Ive spliced 2 ECU's into one crank sensor so I believe it may work, but it would be a trial and er...

Re: FRP Duratec Turbo Project!

Lol at Evilrob!!! Dave you already have wheel speed sensors if you have abs, if not you can retro fit ABS from another puma. Launch control is just a rev limiter and power control depending how you set it up, usually retarding ignition timing or cutting a percentage of sparks per cycle, or if ...

Re: FRP Duratec Turbo Project!

Oh and the plated diff was in this car when I had around 350bhp, with standard driveshafts! But torque steer is about a lot more then equal length shafts, they are a small part if the equation, there is also weight distribution, road surface, torque, downforce, lift, tyre compound, drag ect ect. Whe...

Re: FRP Duratec Turbo Project!

I already have ratios for the gears programmed into a custom file in the ECU for data logging, but there is always going to be an issue with doing it that way. When racing, the point of gear shift will be fairly consistent, but when driving normally, the change can vary a lot. I think I calculated t...

Re: FRP Duratec Turbo Project!

I used to have a tran-x plated diff and torque steer was a lot more apparent with it, so I'll stick with my ATB! There is no simple way to lower torque automatically based on gear, I could mount a button on the steering wheel that will limit boost, but with a 14psi spring fitted, it's still going to...

Re: FRP Duratec Turbo Project!

Ha ha, it's hairy to say the least!! I just have a quaife ATB LSD in mine, when you plant it you can feel the thing trying it's best to put the power down, transferring the power from one side to the other. But because of the efficiency of my engine and the size of the turbo, it's not like a switch,...
