Update: I manage to solve the problem. I used the old clock spring, which I separated from the steering wheel in situ, then I popped the new steering wheel in, inserted the clock spring, and that was it. No need to mess with those pesky connectors.
Ahh - that was probably why I remember it being easy as I never actually swapped out the clockspring - just cleaned it as the grating sound was a known issue easily remedied
