Hi there,

Basic Question. I'm charging my neighbour's dead battery in her Puma. Do I need to disconnect the battery leads first?

Cheers.

Stu.

The official answer is YES, I think, but I've never bothered and had no problems using a 4 anp old fashioned charger in the past, I nowadays use an "intelligent" charger though.

You can charge it on the car.
1. Connect the +/positive (red) charger clamp to the +/positive battery terminal.
2. Connect the -/negative (black) charger clamp to the -/negative battery terminal.
3. Disconnect in reverse order.

Note:
1. Disconnecting the battery will lose the radio code and the clock time.

Directly connecting the clamps to the battery terminals is OK in the case of a Puma. However, for a car fitted with a BMS (Battery Management System), the -/negative (black) charger clamp must be connected to an earthed part of the engine/bodywork, not direct to the -/negative battery terminal, otherwise the BMS will not function correctly.
