Door not latching

Today, went to close nearside passenger door and it did not close. It just stays open as the door catch is not working. I can get it to stay closed by holding the door closed and then activating the central locking. When this is done the catch holds the door closed. On unlocking the doors the door is held shut until manually opened. Then it won't shut until locked again. Does it need a replacement lock mechanism or is there anything else that can be done. Any advice would be appreciated, especially if you've had this same issue.

By the lack of replies it would seem that this is a case of bad luck rather than a common problem area. The Issue was the failure of the door lock motor unit. Resolved by replacing with a good used unit which are easily available and cheap. The job involved stripping the door and removing the frame and window, after which access is possible. Having never done door work before this took a whole day, but it's back together and working fine now.
