I take mine off at least once a year and clean them off, then retreat then with Thompsons water seal or old engine oil (messy job) to stop them absorbing moisture, the arches have all been treated with Bilt Hamber under body wax.
I have driven a Puma without the rear liners and I could hear stones etc. hitting the arches.

Since I drive the car also in the winter and where I'm from they sprinkle the roads with gravel when snow falls, the liners save the wheel wells from a lot of stonechips. I didn't like that the original ones are made out of carpet and they stay wet for qute a long time, so i have bought aftermarket plastic ones from some Polish manufacturer. Sadly the quality of them was really bad and I managed to fit only the front ones after a lot of modifying, warping and cutting. But no chance with the rear ones. So I attached some ruber lining on the edges of the original rear liners to keep the wet carpet from touching the metal. I take them out once in the while and give them a thourough wash, while keeping on top of rust prefention of course, that is key.
