Hi folks, long time no see. I havent been on for a few years for reasons I wont go into. I lost my lovely Puma Millenium which I adored, it was my second puma and I loved that car.

I havent owned a puma for 3 years but fate has meant that I am on the lookout, though funds are limited.

I went to see a 1.7 today but cosmetically it was poor and the engine wasnt perky like it should be. I left disappointed.

But fate has thrown another my way. A silver 01 1.7 puma with 32k on the clock, 1 lady owner from new and full ford service history.

Nervous!

Surely it will still have the rusty wheel arches and door sills!

don't know if timing belt done yet either.

Is such low miles a worry?

What else should I look out for tomorrow?

Keeping my fingers crossed that this is the one!

Welcome back and good luck with it

Sounds as if it could be a good one. Both Pumas I have owned have been very low mileage ones and have proved virtually faultless despite the accepted wisdom that low miles = bad news. So long as the car has a full service history with at least annual oil changes and evidence that the previous owners did not penny pinch on maintenance and repairs i would go with it.

Always worth a try but if its condition is what you probably expect at that mileage its a good price imo.

Thanks chaps!

What about the price, he is looking 1.5k, reckon I could talk him down a bit?

Not sure what Pumas fetch in Northern Ireland but if the car is relatively rust free and with a full service history supporting 32k miles it sounds a bargain to me at GBP 1500.

Well if its relatively rust free I will be amazed lol

I think if a puma was kept sealed in a vacuum since purchase it would still rust ;)

Price does seem good but what dealer expects to get what they are asking? If I decide I want it I will certainly haggle :)

My 30k miles Puma is rust free but has been pampered by owners with the use of several other cars. A dealer around here would probably ask almost £1K more than your £1500. Obviously haggle but if it is a good one, don't lose it for a few quid !!

You are right of course mate. If its a good one and he wont budge, then he will get his money.

Here you go:

Offered it for £1300 as it sits or £1400 with him putting it through MOT. Wife is pregnant and I don't need the hassle so £1400 is good.

Not much rust on her, a little bit on the usual places but I've seen far, far worse. She's clean outside and immaculate inside. Drives superbly, you can tell it's only 32k. Car takes off at 4k revs, just like it should.

I need the timing belt done though so asked him for a price - he'll come back to me later.

It'll be a week or two before I get it but was happy to pay a deposit.

Excited :)

As Scuba Steve points out it can actually be done as a stand alone job,but if you can get it done labour free as I did when I had my cambelt done its worth the peace of mind.

My local ford garage quoted me 480 inc vat for timing belt kit, aux belt, rocker gasket thingy and water pump. All ford parts, does that sound about right?

My wife is a bit miffed about the extra money but this should do me 5 years, do you think?

All advice welcome!

You can probably get genuine Ford parts for a lot less than that garage will charge you.

Also you could consider non oem parts that are even cheaper.

I had mine done by a Ford garage who were happy for me to supply my own parts,I also haggled on the labour and had them fit my water pump for free.

I had done my rocker gasket myself previously, and iirc my total for the cambelt kit. auxilliary belt, water pump amd the labour was about £385

I think my auxilliary belt was £30 and like I said I had already done my Rocker gasket which I think was also about £30
You can save a few bob asking for combined postage on the bits
My haggled labour was £220.

Also I may have mentioned it before but the water pump can be done as a seperate job without messing with the cambelt, so you dont have to have it done, I just chose to do mine as I have long term plans for the car, and the labour was free.

they are charging me 165 labour + vat so the rest must be parts.

gonna have to sell a guitar to help pay for it but should be worth it for the piece of mind.
