Posting this on behalf of my mum (she's not quite brave enough to join up yet lol).

She told me on my last phone call home that there is a grinding sort of noise coming from the steering on her 1.7 when manuvering, or going onto full lock. I'm sure I had the same noise when I was running the car, but it kind of went away on it's own. Any thoughts? I'll forward her any replies you have.

Thanks all :)

It's probably the clock spring behind the steering wheel.

If you (or your mum / dad) takes off the cowling around the steering column, you'll see where the two little brass pins rotate in the groove. It'll be this either dry, or clogged up with crud. Mine did that about 2 years ago and after a few well directed blasts with WD40, it's never done it again.

And you asked a very similar question back in December 2007 Neil!

Think the 25degree temperature is getting to him... LOL :funny:

Must be - the aircon is knackered in our work tent and I'm sweating to death!

Thanks for that, will get on the wire and relay that back home!

Yeah, I cleaned mine a month or so ago and it's as quiet as a mouse now.

Was dead easy to take apart (A job for you when you get back I'm guessing...lol) and the two pins mentioned were worn and dust was everywhere. A good clean and some ZX1 (Better than WD40) sorted it.

Mine does it on and off and both other Fords I have owned have done it. Happens very rarely though so hardly worth the time to clean :p

Good info post as found on 'search' button.

Pips made his first grindy scratchy noise last night-and as it was wet and grim thought it prudent to check. This has probably saved me a few bob in garage/mechanic fee's as it did irk me having never heard it before.

Thank you! :)

Ha ha - mine has done this in the past, my VW has done the same thing too - so its not just a 'Ford thing' Nothing a quick clean & re-grease can't fix
