Lambda/hego question!

Hi folks. To cut a long story short... I had some issues with my car and had the Engine Management System looked at by a friend of a friend. It flagged the Lambda Sensor as faulty, and thus the diagnostics ended there.

From looking at previous MOT's which included emissions testing, the Lambda value has been identical on every single one... so I am guessing it failed a long time ago :-P

I've pretty sure I have identified the Lambda Sensor, but I'll post a piccy later and hopefully some kind soul can confirm it for me.

My question is, is it difficult to replace a Lambda Sensor? What kind of problems could I cause if I mess it up? I don't want to pay Ford for one, so could anyone recommend an alternative supplier? Also, is the HEGO sensor the same as a Lambda Sensor?

the friend of a friend also suggested that I used some carb degreaser to fix a problem with the throttle sticking. However for the life of me I cannot recall exactly where he said it needed to be applied. He did say to "remove a couple of tens", or words to that effect. I have a rough idea of where he meant, and I'll post a piccy later.

OKies, is this the Lambda Sensor?

...and finally, I believe the "tens" are the two bolts on the item just to the left of the red cylinder bit in the middle. It is a square peice of metal, with a round piece of metal sitting on top. It is secured by a bolt located diagonal top right (one of the "tens"?) and a second bolt diagonal bottom left (obscured by a hose).

Can anyone please tell what this is and if it is safe to crack it open and clean it with carb degreaser?

Lambda, O2 sensor and Hego are the same. Easy to change, but get a proper 22mm lambda socket, if you follow the grey wire from the plug, you will see that it bolts into the top of the manifold, behind the head.

Regarding an alternate supplier, try local motor factors, but ask for an "NTK" manufactured lambda, NTK make them for Ford. Also be aware that the plug on the lambda changed in 2000, early ones are square and black, later ones are round and green, or blue in the case of the post cat lambda.

Make sure you get one with the plug already on it. Ones that you need to reuse your existing plug on will just lead to greater potential for error.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but on the subject of the HEGO sensor...

I was told by Tremona that mine is 'switching slowly' (early Puma). However there are no symptoms such as low mpg. I get slightly lower mpg than I did but I expected that due to the change in road type for my work journey. I reckon I still get 35mpg minimum.

Assuming it *is* the HEGO sensor and I don't fix it yet as it doesn't seem that bad will anything drastic happen?!

no, but you'd probably notice smoother running and performance with a new one... they can get less responsive with age....

Perhaps cleaning it with carb cleaner would restore its performance

NGK or Bosch, but don't use a universal sensor as you can encounter poor connections .
