Been on the look out for a puma after having my escort for what seems like forever.

I've narrowed my search to a few locally that I'm going to go and see this weekend : all aobut the £2500 mark.
I've seen the newby questions on here and the FAQ as well so are there any other things I should look out for?

Thanks you in advance.

Hello there. Well if your looking for a puma one of the best pieces of advice is to make sure the cambelt has been done. The service interval was reduced on the 1.7 and not evevryone knows. I think its 6 years/80k miles.

What engine are you looking at? The 1.7 is the one to own really though the others are fine too.

Welcome along Richard!

As Drad has said - be on the lookout for a cambelt change ever 80,000 miles or 5 years, whichever came 1st. A good service history is always important regardless of how many miles it's done though. Shows care has been taken with the car.

Look for rust over the wheel arches - especially the rear ones. Check the Heater works fine - hot and cold. If not then its a new valve but that's only £25-£30 and 30 mins work.

Check the paintwork in general for repairs - noting that red and yellow didn't have a laquer coat for protection so watch for fade.

Good luck :eek:k:

Hi Richard, good luck with the search.

As above really and make sure you check the oil level as the 1.7 doesn't like to get low.

Condition and history along with how well it runs is what i'd be looking out for.

Thanks :)

I'm only looking at 1.7 ones at the moment as they are the only ones I can see! I haven't seen many 1.4 or 1.6 models about.

1.7 is the one to have, trust me! Its got character. Some days mine wants to play and feels like a 2.0, sometimes its grumpy and feels sluggish. Always a joy though.

Not been here for what seems like ages!

I did get a car: a beaten up old escort just to see me through, but I'm getting fed up with that now and on the look out again for a Puma :)

Fingers crossed.

Yet another update....

I found a puma 8) It's a friends mothers car and she's wanting to get rid of it now she's getting on a bit (not being rude.. ) and she's saying she has trouble getting in and out of it with her back.

So when she's found her new car - I think it'll be a Micra - she'll let me have hers for next to nothing I hope!

BTW - She says it's got a full history and it's now on 70,000 miles on a T registration. Does that mean it should have had a cambelt change?

Keep you posted.

It's taken me a while to get to grips with this whole computer thing, so don't hold your breath

Yeh should get a cambelt change around now really. Maybe another year or so but might aswell do it now. Hope it's a good'un!
