frp brochure states that rear discs are 270mm, there not there 253mm. they were going to use the st170 rear disc setup but instead used the lower focus rear disc setup. typically the 1.8 & 2.0. year 2000 ish / x or w reg etc

st170 upgrade kit is available from pumaspeed (or just buy the caliper carrier & splash guard from ford & some st170 discs.)
calipers & pads for both setups are the same
the setup is fine as it is. altho i will be going to st170 soonish but i have seen that the st170 discs are available with an alloy centre to save weight....! dont know who from yet but will prob get hispec to make mine... will also be making my own alloy mount if possible...

costs; i just paid £41 for discs and pads (mintex).....but i get discount. a good motor factors will want £60 ish (for good stuff; dont go buying rubbish), ford will want...a lot!

you will need a (rear) caliper piston rewind tool tho typically £20

minimum thickness; 8.9mm. there 10.3mm to start with
REMOVAL

jack up rear beam
support either side of rear beam with axle stands
remove wheels ('break' nuts before jacking up)
remove calipers 4x 13mm bolts(do both sides before proceeding as a stuck bolt after uv changed one set is a nightmare)

[albumimg]1190[/albumimg]

lock together 2 spanners for extra leverage but be careful
use a crow bar to lever the caliper from the disc
use a hammer to gentle tap the pads out
use a hammer (not gently) to hit the hub of the disc (inbetween the wheel studs)(NOT THE DOMED BIT RIGHT IN THE CENTRE)
use hammer in reverse (like a hook but hitting...!) to hit the back of the disc (where caliper was), spin disc, hit, etc.....disc will come loose eventually; dont be shy!

[albumimg]1191[/albumimg]

use wind back tool to wind back the piston to make room for new (thicker) pads

[albumimg]1192[/albumimg]

refit pads after covering back with copper grase; fiddly
wire brush hub, copper grease

[albumimg]1193[/albumimg]

clean new disc with brake cleaner, fit, cover centre with copper grease
refit caliper; tightly

[albumimg]1194[/albumimg]

refit wheel

its not hard at all.....its just a pain having to buy / borrow a wind back tool!

lol

just thinking; that splash guard needs to be made from carbon fibre......

Hi,

Thank for the 'How to', it's perfect.

But it still a question in my mind :
- what about the 'brake distributor' (i'm not sure of the translate, sorry i'm French).

With 280mm rear disc, is there no risk to block or just slow down more rear wheels than front wheels ?

Or original 'PCRV' (look in the TIS) is doing always is job, and front wheels will have always more brake power, than rear wheels ?

Because i really don't want on the first turn, to go out of the road with the back of my car kissing the front of it .....

I'm going to mount in short term, 300mm front and 280mm rear brake setup from an ST170, to my Puma.

Thank you for answers.

the master cylinder in the engine bay controls how much force / pressure / bias the rear wheels get....so fronts will always have more power, dont worry!

either remove the abs sensor (will probably break)

or remove the hub;

undo large bolt in centre of hub while break is held on
remove caliper, disc
slide off hub

should really use a new hub nut

Cheers jacko after removing the other side i realised its covered in muck as the other side was still shiny metal. I have also come across my rear left caliper has seized! Any ideas what to or maybe get a new one from? Is this part also escort or just a standard puma front caliper?

Focus rear then. Any ideas on cost?

the ebay one looks about right

yep, altho the st170 setup is 280mm, not 270. weird i know.

to convert to 280mm you need the caliper bracket / slider and angle grind the lip of the splash guards... nothing else is needed (except discs!)

just beware...it makes the back end a bit more lively so your abs will be working harder.

Hi, can I just add don't forget to take your handbrake off!!
I forgot this as I changed mine a few months ago!(I did take it off after 5 min of trying to prize it off!)

Any tips on what you would need extra to put st170 rear brakes on a std. puma?
Do I need hubs etc too.?

Jacko did you ever get Hi spec ever make you rotor and bell 270mm rear discs?

Cheers

Ally

No, but they do have it on file as theyve done one for someone else...

I will be leaving Ford Puma land as soon as i have sold mine so i wont be around to answer questions, sorry
