New to the site so be gentle, i've been trying to find out if it'll be possible to mate a 1.8 zetec engine to a puma gearbox? or if it's easier to just fit the entire 1.8 engine/gearbox combo.

my understanding is that they are both fords ib5 boxes with the same bell housing, is it that simple
(ignoring plumbing/wiring etc, i'll worry about that later if its possible)

are there any threads of people who have done it?

many thanks

ps. it'd be turbo'd

Yes you can but it's a lot of work with little return as the 1.8 Zetec E on a single throttle body is only about the same as a 1.7 Puma in standard tune and it weighs a lot more. I think a couple of guys on here have fitted MK1 Focus RS engines which makes the transplant a lot more worthy.
Don't forget that the Zetec E is arse about face to the Zetec SE found in the Puma so the inlets and exhausts are swapped around and that's not the least of your worries. Pumanoob, I think, is one of the guys who's fitted a FRS engine so have a look at his posting

I've never tried personally but the general consensus online is that the zetec-e has a different bolt pattern. So no basically.

If you were set on fitting the 1.8 though, the early ib5 rod linkage box from a late model escort should fit ok. This box has the rod linkage rather than the cable linkage on the focus box so will work with the puma linkage. Again I've never done it so only assuming, but there's a good chance the bolt pattern for the gearbox mount will be the same, knowing what ford are like for interchangeability.

The focus 1.8 engine is the same dimensions and set up as the 2.0, an has the starter on the rear, so a puma box won't bolt straight on. But the 1.8 box is an ib5 so you can use the puma gearbox top mount, and a custom rear mount. But if it's in a puma you'd have to convert it from rod linkage to cable linkage too. Not a major task.

Alternatively you can use a KA gearbox that I believe bolts straight on with the rear starter, but the gearbox top mount is different so you'd have to use a puma no with KA bell housing.

Fiesta 1.3 endura 1995-2002 gearbox may be the one , rod change , hydraulic clutch, rear starter and the top mount in the right place, I was looking at using one as ive got a spare st170 engine and a spare puma.............
