Hi
I have been looking for a relatively rust free puma 1.7 for some summer
fun, and bought one from the auctions last week. It has one welded patch on
the front underside of the N/S sill, and one very small rust bubble on the
N/S/R wheel arch. Otherwise it appears to be rust free. It was declared a
Cat D insurance loss earlier this year for a miniscule knock under the
front headlight that you wouldn't even notice if i didn't point it out. So
far so good,I hear you say....a cheap solid puma for the summer.
Unfortunately, when starting it, it became apparent that there are some
engine issues. There is a tappetty noise, especially on deceleration, up to
2000 rpm, after which the engine sounds sweet as a nut. There is also some
smoke from the exhaust on starting, although not excessive (valve stem oil
seals?). Aside from this, the car starts, drives and stops as it should, pulls
very well, and doesn't overheat. I think a top end overhaul is all that's
needed, but no guarantees. The car was registered 28/1/98, so probably has
a substantial MOT still, but I don't have the log book so can't check.

][/GALLERY][/img]he auction company say V5s sometimes
follow on from the insurance company after sale, but not always. If not,
it's £25 for a new one (no vehicle inspection needed). I am too old to
rebuild engines now, but this car is way too good to scrap, so I thought
I'd offer it here first before dealing with all the dreamers on Ebay. First
£300 buys it, buyer collects. There may or may not be a V5 here shortly. I
can't work out how to post pictures here, but they are available on request
by emailing
