Iv just drove 15 miles and used about 6 litres of water doing so, having to stop at the petrol station twice to add water. Obviously there is a major leak somewhere. The heater are now cold as all the water would have just drained. There is a hissing sound coming from the passenger side of the engine bay towards the back, I can see drips of water from under the drivers side of the bonnet if I get on my knees. The temp gauge doesn't see to move past half way though. There is no reason to believe its the head gasket as there is no water in the oil or vice versa. Please somebody help. Water pump maybe?

It will probably be either your HCV has broke or one of your water hoses has split

Have a look in daylight a five minute look by yourself in daylight is worth hours of specualtion from us here

Good luck with it

if coming from passenger side could be heater control valve leaking try and move the pipes gentle if cracked then will fall off!

Yes it was a ford part I used. The hissing is coming from down the bak of the passenger dide and not from the top where the hcv is

The hcv wouldn't use that much water tough would it. It's literally going quicker than I put it in.

Sorry, from looking under the car when iv put water in there is a puddle from the diver side of the cr but it's not a huge puddle if that makes sense. Its just dripping

There is also a block with a large pipe going to it on the passenger side which has hoses to amongst other things the HCV maybe a weak pipe got weakened even more when you changed the HCV

There is also a large pipe from the radiator to the plastic thermostat housing which can also break on the drivers side

I had a quick look yesterday and as you said there's a pipe on the right hand side which has a huge split right down it, which is just making a big puddle on top of the gear box housing. It also seems like the water pump has gone. If the car was driven whilst there was a split in the water pipe would this eventually lead to the water pump failing. Today when I started the engine there was a screeching sound from the drivers side and then a leak underneath so I assume that's he water pump as well as the hose towards the assented side!

Im glad so far its a cheap and simple matter of a split hose which at the moment is the main problem. However you did mention previously you had a drip on the drivers side as well.

Water pumps have a small hole in the bottom which iirc is or at least used to serve as warning if your water pump bearing is wearing i.e. its supposed to leak as a warning the bearing is going.

However there are a number of other things that could cause a screech on the drivers side that are not related to the water system / pump so dont rush out and get the pump done just yet. And there are a number of other places you could get a drip.

Get under there and check the large hose from the bottom of the radiator to the thermostat housing and check as best you can the housing isnt cracked or as Tom said the gasket isn't leaking or another hose is split or the header tank is leaking.

hi, thanks for helping. it isnt a screech as such but just the worn bearing kind of sound. just seems everything has gone bad in one afternoon. a split water pipe, a maybe knackerd water pump, and also oil leak from the rocker cover. could they all be linked in any way or just a coincidence all three have happened in a matter of hours?

Actually they all didnt really happen in a matter of hours, the hose went obviously, but the possible water pump and it is only possible at the moment could have been leaking slowly for weeks or months likewise a leaking rocker gasket could have been leaking for months and months, you just noticed the probs all at the same time.

I had a leak too, but was more of a very slow seep.
Thermostat housing was changed and so far, no more leaks!
