I got a new battery for an Acer Aspire 5735 but the laptop won't recognise it and the battery light flashes orange constantly. Any suggestions, please? (keep them clean!) :-D

You could maybe go into device manager and go to the properties of the battery and try using the troubleshooter or updating the driver

1) Does the system indicate the battery is "plugged in, but not charging" or does it indicate no battery is present at all?

2) Where did you get this battery from? If it's a cheap non-OEM battery (lighter/different to your last, maybe cheaper plastic feel) there may be fitment issues:

2a) Check battery contacts on battery are even (these can snap/push in on cheaper batteries and not make contact with the laptop's pins, particularly on installation if the battery is not OEM as the dimensions could be out and the locating pins will smack into the plastic and break things)

2b) Did the battery fit into the laptop easily, first time? Or were there issues?

2c) Does it visually appear to fit as well as the last battery?

2d) Do the battery pins (as far as you can see into the plastic slots) seem to match those of your previous battery? They may be too short if it's a generic battery for several models.

3) Is the battery lamp flashing constantly (steady flash) or is there some sort of sequence (i.e. 5 flashes, then stop, then 5 flashes)?

4) If you unplug the mains, and try to power up the laptop, will it power up from the battery?

5) If you power off the laptop, remove the battery + mains, then plug back into mains, then without turning the laptop on, watch the charge/battery light as you plug the battery back in - what happens? Does it indicate it's present and charging for a few seconds? Or does it go straight to flashing? Or nothing at all?

2) Where did you get this battery from? If it's a cheap non-OEM battery (lighter/different to your last, maybe cheaper plastic feel) there may be fitment issues: non-OEM but identical otherwise

2a) Check battery contacts on battery are even (these can snap/push in on cheaper batteries and not make contact with the laptop's pins, particularly on installation if the battery is not OEM as the dimensions could be out and the locating pins will smack into the plastic and break things) identical

2b) Did the battery fit into the laptop easily, first time? Or were there issues? fits perfectly

2c) Does it visually appear to fit as well as the last battery? yes

2d) Do the battery pins (as far as you can see into the plastic slots) seem to match those of your previous battery? They may be too short if it's a generic battery for several models. identical

3) Is the battery lamp flashing constantly (steady flash) or is there some sort of sequence (i.e. 5 flashes, then stop, then 5 flashes)? constant steady flashing

4) If you unplug the mains, and try to power up the laptop, will it power up from the battery? yes - but probably only from charge already in there when received

5) If you power off the laptop, remove the battery + mains, then plug back into mains, then without turning the laptop on, watch the charge/battery light as you plug the battery back in - what happens? Does it indicate it's present and charging for a few seconds? Or does it go straight to flashing? Or nothing at all? starts flashing and a message appears saying the system does not recognise the battery

OK, thanks for the info.

Based on what you've said, it seems like the replacement battery is a dud. This is quite common on non-OEM batteries (how much cheaper was it than OEM?).

It appears the battery is electrically connected to the laptop as it will power up from it, but the laptop cannot communicate with the battery, or is not satisfied with the output it is receiving, or the battery itself is not happy with the output from the laptop. These problems can occur when non-OEM batteries are used because the charge monitoring and control circuitry in the battery is not the same and may not fully replicate the behaviour of the original design. In such cases what can happen is the laptop attempts to charge the battery, but gives up within a few seconds as a protective measure.

It is still possible the battery is not making a good electrical connection on all pins (power pins would be longest, usually, thus more likely to reach than data pins), even if it looks like it fits. Or, there could be internal damage/poor connectivity (in which case you want to get rid of that battery anyway).

Such issues are very hard to diagnose unfortunately. It is usually easier to return the battery and try another one, as further debugging requires opening the battery (voiding the warranty anyway) and/or performing potentially dangerous experiments with the battery pins to determine whether the battery is operating correctly.

You could try reinstalling drivers, etc but I'm not certain it would make a difference. Such problems are lower-level usually, if it's misbehaving even when the laptop is off, it's not a driver issue. :-(
