Hi, im trying to modernize the puma a bit. I've got an aftermarket kenwood unit in which im made up with. Im trying to add a steering stalk adapter though and im struggling. On my stereo there is one blue wire that says steering wheel control on it. It says "39 + - - " on it if that matters. I followed a guide on here and got a controller from a mk1 focus but its got 3 electrical connections on it. Can i get these to talk to each other? Thanks

You will need a Focus stalk adaptor, £20 on eBay or thereabouts. You'll need to solder wire onto the connector terminals on the Focus stalk control and run these in behind the dash to the back of the stereo, then connect to your stalk adaptor, then connect to your Kenwood.

From memory there are 3 terminals on the Focus stalk control, only 2 are needed but sadly I can't remember which ones! Measure resistance with a multimeter and you want the ones that give a different values depending on which button is pressed (open circuit for no button pressed). Doesn't matter on polarity of leads to your stalk adaptor as it's only looking for resistance.

Hi thanks for the reply. Is this what you mean?

Actually I think this will do it and it's cheaper too. Works with Mk1 Focus stalk which is the part the guide on here recommends (and I've successfully fitted). Make sure you also get a Kenwood patch lead so that it will attach to your head unit.

Ah no. The patch lead comes out of the little black box made by autoleads or whoever. It should terminate in a male or female bullet connector that you attach to that blue Kenwood wire.

Basically there are half a dozen patch lead types to suit different aftermarket head units e.g. Sony, Pioneer, Alpine etc. Some terminate in a jack plug and some are just a single wire like yours.

Here is the link to the Connects2 version: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F171381795851

Ok cool so to sum up i need that patch lead and the other side of the stalk loom from a mk1 focus? Am i best going a scrap yard for that?

You don't necessarily need the stalk loom. I soldered direct onto connector that is part of the stalk control itself. There are 3 pins but only 2 do something useful - apologies but I can't remember which ones they are. If you have a multimeter you can check - hold the leads onto 2 of the connectors and look for different resistances as you press each button. Once you've found the right pins, solder ~2m of wire onto each one, connect to Ford Focus stalk adaptor (cut off connector and connect leads to input leads of the little black module). Patch lead onto other side of module goes to your blue wire on Kenwood.

Grogee I'm at a bit of a loss here. Trying to get this all sorted but cant figure it out. Can you have a look here and tell me what goes where?

I can assume "1" goes into the single lead coming out of the back of the head unit. 2 goes into one side of the black box, but 3 doesnt fit into either side?

3 goes into the other side of the "x07" black box. Trust me it fits!

You then have two wires that go into the big black connector. That would normally connect to a harness in a Focus or similar but Puma doesn't have it. Instead, chop the connector off and connect those two wires directly to the steering wheel control unit. It has a little connector with 3 terminals and 2 of them operate remote but I can't remember which 2 unfortunately.

You'll need to extend those wires (solder and heatshrink or bullet connectors) behind the radio and into the steering column shroud.

The two wires you need to extend are both white with black stripe by the looks of it. Just to confirm the single blue or purple one is the one to connect to your Kenwood's blue remote wire.

One side of the black box has got 10 slots in, the other has got 12, so both will go into one side but not the other. My head hurts

Ok been thinking about this logically. There are only two pins coming out of 3, so if i take them and try them in every combination in each bit of the black box, i think eventually ill find the right two.

Now I'm confused! Where did you get these bits from? There should be another part of the harness which connects to vehicle radio connector and new stereo - there should be 2 wires (red or yellow, and a black ground wire) going to the black box to supply it power.

An example is here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PC99-X07-Steering-Stalk-Control-Adaptor-For-Ford-Focus-1998-2005/183768136109?hash=item2ac96f39ad:g:X~EAAOSwHcpcrNlS

Note the two *additional* connectors that fit onto the Ford wiring, one black one brown.
