Hi there...

Water pump died today... started making a bad noise and the died... pulled into the A1 auto centre that fitted the CAT and passed the MoT... gonna cost £500 to fix...

OEM Timing Belt £129
Water Pump £31.57
Drive Belt £18.40
antifreeze Change £33.33
3.5 labour £203.00

plus VAT is £500.00

what do I do... they don't have the tool either...

crap... crap... crap...

Dang. Not a bad price, though.

If the rest of the car isn't too rotten, definitely worth doing - will be sound for another 5 years / 80,000 miles.

They should probably replace the rocker cover gasket while they're at it as it usually leaks if reused - genuine Ford only, the pattern gaskets are almost guaranteed to leak.

£33.33 for antifreeze?

just looking online to see if I can get parts cheaper...

is 3.5 hours a good estimate regarding how long it will take?

also... will they need to remove the rocker cover if they are just changing the belt... they don't have a timing tool so will just be marking it up etc...

don't know what other choice I have...

Is that Timing/Cambelt Kit £129.00, including VAT?

Gates, who manufacture for Ford, £59.75:

Genuine Ford £91.34:

I'd be very wary if they've never timed up a Puma cambelt before; it's a very specific process due to the variable cam timing. I'm led to believe it's tricky even with the tool, here's a guide someone helpfully made by cribbing the details off Ford TIS, supplementing with their own photos and whacking it all in a PDF:
https://d2ppvlu71ri8gs.cloudfront.net/items/3A2B1B0T1X2j1u2h2a32/Ford%20Puma%201.7%20Crankshaft%20seal%20change%20guide.pdf

3.5 hours sounds about right. They will need to remove the rocker cover.

Maybe send them the above linked-to PDF and see if they're still up for it?

If it was me, and I was going to keep it, and it's an FRP, I would have the job done properly. Look at this link to Chris at Allison Automotive, to see what really needs doing:
https://www.projectpuma.com/viewtopic.php?f=82&t=29959&p=353484&hilit=Allison+Automotive#p353484

Stage 1 £275 labour (if it hasn't gone up) seems pretty good value for what he does, compared with A1's 3.5 hr labour £203.00 + VAT = £243.60, for what they do.

Oh, you've got an FRP - definitely get it to Chris; he'll get the engine spot on for you.

Failing that, Tremona in Southampton have the tool. Bit nearer.

So I have asked the garage not to do anything...

I have ordered a new pump and will endeavour to replace it without removing the timing belt on Saturday...

What could possibly go wrong...

Not so easy, but possible:
HOW TO: Change the waterpump (without removing the cambelt):

You may as well put a new drive belt on, as you need to remove it, and replace the coolant/antifreeze.

So... all done...

took me 4 hours... couldn't get the alternator off without removing the inlet manifold... so i removed the PAS pump instead... fortunately it is at the front on mine...

Spent quite a bit of time feeling for the bolts that hold the pump in... kept looking at the new one for reference... finally got it all fitted backs nd filled up... running really smoothly now... the old one was proper knackered...

Happy Days...

Alcons need doing next...
