Hiya

Doesn't sound good :( Well, the meet was probably only going to be you me & Dan at best, as you said, so we'll cancel for tomorrow and see what happens later in the summer. I was going to post it on facebook owners but I won't now ;)

From what you've described I wouldn't be immediately jumping at a bottom end rebuild. I think you'd have different smoke issues at different points in the cycle along with lots of wet oil at the end of the exhaust. I'd want someone to drive behind me to see what was happening on acceleration and also at idle. If it's black smoke and only on overrun then I wouldn't necessarily think it an oil issue. However, I haven't done any serious work on cars since they started getting complicated. Give me a nice old mini I'll be fine ;) haha

Hi J,

sorry I had to bail on the first meet. The engine is very sorry..

I've had a full diagnosis following a strip down of the engine after I gave the block and head together to a specialist.

26% cylinder leakage, piston to bore clearance is twice what it should be, so there is leakage past the rings.
Valves are also not sealing 100%.
Crankshaft has serious end float, and I'm in a for a new one :-( very expensive part.
The oil pump that's done 5000miles approx is worn too. I think because of the end float.

I will probably move forward and get the engine built correctly once and for all.

No worries, these things happen. Yeah, that kind of summary isn't going to give you the highest performing engine. I used to do those sort of rebuilds myself cos then you knew what you were getting, but it's a lot of hard work and wives don't always take to having cylinder heads baking in their ovens ;) haha. I have to say I wouldn't do it now and I guess that's why I finally decided not to go ahead with buying the manufacturing kit for Global Lights, cos I just wouldn't want to do all that work myself ;)

I hope you manage to get it sorted anyway before the summer disappears again ;)

It's not that I couldn't do it as I've built a CVH before, but for the fact I don't have all the measuring equipment, nor the cleanest of environments. I also just want peace of mind that if something is wrong then I can take it back. It's not the cheapest engine to replace.

Yes, hopefully get out for some of the Summer. It'll be a race for Ford Fair now, and I was previously in good time with only some smaller things to do! (which now won't get done due to funds)

Do you usually find with anything car related, that when you get on a 'level plain' as it where and it looks like you're getting somewhere, something always happens that puts a damper on everything?

I find that when I make plans to do bits and pieces something happens that requires more money spending on it, instead of doing the bits I want!

Hi Cherry,

Yes! I said this year I didn't want to be rushing for Ford Fair, it's happened every other time I've been. I almost would have made Fiesta in the Park - I just didn't want to commit until I knew the car was right and obviously turns out it wasn't.

It's not the effort or time in dismantling the car or anything like that this time around that's going to get me - it's the funds. Take money out of the equation and none of this would be a problem. Just unfortunate that it's the most expensive part of the car, and the part that makes the car worth what it's insured for.
