Thnx for the info. I dug a little deeper and I can see the loom from the ECU going through the metal next to the firewall. But how do I remove the rubber grommet and pull the cables through the hole? I'm a bit of a newbie, so I'm scared to damage the cables...

So guys, a quick question about the engine loom... What exactly do I need to pull out and swap over to the other car? There is a big bundle of cables coming out of the ECU going behind the dashboard, I hope I won't need to get this out :?

Quick update: I went for the donor car idea. Bought a Puma 1.7 with major rust but a good engine (100k miles). I will create a seperate topic to keep you guys updated and post questions. Thanks again for all the help!

Ok, that clears things up a bit I was just considering that... a quick calculation shows that I will need at least 700-800 euros for parts. And it turns out there's a scrap Puma for sale here in The Netherlands for 600...

Many thanks for your replies, I have a good overview right now of what needs to be done. Sourcing the engine and the parts won't be a problem. However, the ECU and engine loom give me some worries. There are quite a bit of ECUs for sale on ebay, but which one to get? How do I know it's been on...

Thanks Alex! This helps a lot! I've got some more questions... It turns out there are two variants of the 1.7, MHA and MHB. I have a 2001 Puma. Which one will I need, or are they interchangeable? What about the exhaust manifold, can I simply transfer the 1.6 one to the 1.7? I see no difference...
