Hi all .
Im having major problems with my 1997 puma 1.7 engine has been rattly for some time and all 4 cylinders have been full of oil ,but I have kept it going topping oil .The other day it came to a complete halt like it had run out of petrol when I turned the key again its spinning over really fast could cambelt be snapped ? are these a non interferance head as it hasn't locked up .Any thoughts gratefully appreciated :)

The head is an interference fit. If your cambelt has gone you'll get nothing...in any case it's usually the cambelt tensioner that goes rather than the cambelt- same result though.

If you have oil in the bores it's likely to be worn valve guides, worn piston rings or the dreaded Nikasil bore lining breaking down.

I guess it's also possible that the engine has seized and the starter has stripped it's teeth...

Thought that would be the case .never thought about starter stripping .will put it in gear jack it up and very slowly turn the wheel .What other engine could I fit thinking of 1.8 or 2.0l zetec would these go on the mounts and mate up with existing gearbox ? Regards Kev

A 1.6 will fit no problem, but you'll need a new ECU etc as the VCT ECU won't work on any other engine.

The IB5 gearbox won't fit to either a 1.8 or a 2.0 Ford engine unfortunately I don't think.

Cheers Dal .
So If I bought an old 1.6 escort ,engine will bolt in on original mounts and on to box would just have to fit loom and ecu ?

Maybe not an old Escort engine as that's a different series Zetec. I think that joined to an MTX gearbox. (Help Jacko!) A 2000+ ish Fiesta 1.6 or a Ka 1.6 for that matter will be ok. Or the 1.4 from a puma even.

Yes It did join on to mtx gearbox from memory that series of zetec was virtually a cvh with a twin cam? At mo I don't know what damage will be will be taking cam cover off tomorrow but thinking of a way to get it running again If major damage has occurred.

zarablackcoupe on here is selling a complete working 1.7l Puma engine (and gearbox if required) if you want a painless straight swap out...send her a PM

basically.....any ford box will bolt to any ford engine......!

your biggest worry is where the starter goes.....

but off the top of my head the ib5 will fit a zetec as long as the starter doesnt bang into the exhaust etc and you will want to use the puma flywheel....

all 'best guess' until tried for real tho

find out whats in the focus as the 1.6 & 1.8 use an ib5......

Cheers for ideas and advice much appreciated .I've got 2 pumas original idea was to make one good one out of the 2 but there both great cars and seems a shame to break the cat c as this is on the road running so decided to put them up for sale and try and find a later reg will put link up in for sale if anyones interested .Thanks again and happy new year .
