Hello guys...when im in 5th gear i notice a slight whistle in the tranny...only when i have the foot on the gas...if i take the foot off the pedal i dont hear it anymore...thats only in 5th....any ideas why is that? It can get serious or no biggie? Tnx

Hi mate, I can't say for sure what the issue is, but could you just check, if you are at low revs in 4th and put your foot down and floor it, do you not get anything? Just making sure that it is the transmission and not just a noise tht happens when under load. Could you check the gearbox oil level, the 5th gear is furthest from the engine so is likely to suffer first from oil starvation. There's an Allen key grub screw on the front of the box that you take out and you can put something like a small Allen key in there to check the oil level. The oil is supposed to be just below that hole.

I just changed 2 gaskets on the tranny where the drive shaft goes in and where the stick shaft goes in cause i had some leaks and i topped up with oil...so the level its good...i also changed a bad ball bearing passenger side...so its not that...i can hear that noise only in 5th :( its not very noisy but i can hear it...my mechanic told me about it cause i usually have the radio on and i didnt hear it...he's not a specialist so he couldnt tell me why i hear that whistle...and thats why i wanted to ask u guys

Ah ok, I just thought I'd check invade it was something simple like low oil. If it only happens in one gear, it's not likely to be a bearing as the bearings are shared by all gears, if it's selecting gears fine then the dog teeth and synchro animist be ok so the only other thing I can think of is the actual gears. Could it be possible that it could be a driveshaft CV joint that only makes a noise at high speed. You might not hear it at higher speeds in a lower gear because of engine noise.

Ok...so u dont suspect anything major right? I should be fine? Tnx for the help Errol

I can't say for sure what it is so i wouldn't be able to properly advise on what it might be. If it was my car, I'd just listen for it to get worse and perhaps look out for another gearbox or gear set. If you are able to change the box yourself, it's a few hours work for peace of mind. Generally speaking though, it's crunching and not selecting gears properly that I'd consider a problem.

Ok...ill see if it gets worse...now its not a problem...i just wanted to figure it out see if it will become a problem...so ill let it be for the moment...tnx for the advice Errol...cheers
