the car just lately is making a noise simular to the exhaust vibrating against a tin? it always comes in around 2k and ends just over. I can only describe it as a burst lasting a couple of seconds at the most?

the car doesn't do it stationary only when driving and worse through the first three gears. I have checked the exhaust mounts and looked to see if anything is touching but nothing, its bugging me now.......

Its brobably just rattling on the heat sheild, mine does the same, you could just take the heat sheild out.

check the rivited plate where the spare wheel bolt comes through to the boot has n`t worked loose - the metal on metal can sound a bit like the exhaust vibrating

Much apreciated all cheers  checked the heat sheild at the back silencer box which is nice and sturdy, it looks like there's another up front of the exhaust which I need to check out, is there any other's that I might have missed?

its wiered how it only kicks in at around 2k and not at any other revs? also sounds under the gear lever but I know these cars have a Habit of discuising noises.

I can only hear mine when the car is running, under acceleration around 2000rpm, cant hear anything when it is stationary. Im not sure if its my catalitic converter mind, the braiding thats on the outside has started to fray away?

It could well be the CAT slayllian, just stuck it up on ramps and checked around the heat sheild near the gear linkage, checked the heat sheild around the manifold and below and can't see anything causeing any problems.

My lad just came with me for a spin as his hearing is a bit better than mine, he is convinced its around near the front. at first I thought it was the aux belt tensioner but surely this would do it when the car is stationary? its annoying whatever it is as its easily heard outside the car too.

been under the car while on ramps checking the heat shields but nothing, I finally heard it again but this time when the car was stationary being revved to 2k, it turns out its the "Idler Pully" squealing and rumbling at tickover.

anyone come across this before? I dripped some oil in the front of the pully which cured it for a short while but then it came back again....

There have been a fair few threads on this recently with one guy pulling his hair out on pistonheads too, mine developed this symptom after I had a rocker gasket changed a month or so back. I sourced the noise to the pulley mentioned and also noted a squeal in damp conditions when starting the car, the squeal would fade after a few minutes but the shrill tinny resonance at 2k remained and could be heard mainly in second and third due to road noise not drowning it out.

After aquiring an oil leak again from the rocker gasket I have just had the car returned from Ford and had a new cam belt and aux belt fitted with the new tensioner. I asked them to retain the parts removed including the rocker gasket which turned out to be a poor fitting pattern part! They also mentioned having to replace one of the cam cover bolts which was missing (located by me tonight in the lower wishbone assembly and must have been dropped by the tech).

The long and short is the noise at 2k has gone plus a small flatspot I had at 2.2k rpm in all gears has also dissappeared, the moral I would say is take the car to a Ford specialist who knows the car and has the correct locking tool to do the job. I would surmise the flatspot was attributed to the vct system being slightly out of synch and the 2k rattle the idler pulley. Car now drives perfectly.

Thanks for the info its much apreciated . I fancy doing this one myself as it doesn't look much of a problem to fit. Its had a new Aux belt a few months back following the good advice I received off this forum. I'm slowly but surely getting their doing odd jobs to this little car from the Rocker Gasket, Brakes, Shocks and a good few other little things along the way.

I have seen a Idler Pully advertised on Ebay but unsure weather to go for this as I'm not sure if its a 100% genuine ford part? I'm also thinking if this Pully is squeeling and Rattling like this would this effect the way the engine is running if its perhaps a bit sticky and not running as smooth as it should?

Received the new Idler Pulley this morning part No: 1139951. I just wanted to check its the right one before I strip the old one off if anyone can give me some comformation please? :eek:k:

Well guys I fitted it this afternoon and it went straight on so I take it its the right one.

the one thing thats I need help with it it still does it at 2000RPM. it doesn't do it coming down the in revs or through the gears only when accelerating up, it hits 2000RPM and makes a sound for a second or two and thats it, it does this through all the gears. it seem like it only does it when the engine is pulling.

one thing is the new Idler Pully has got rid of the rumbling when the car is stationary but certainly hasn't cured the main noise when the cars being driven.

I'm all ears if anyone with any ideas they can throw my way? I know I could take it to a garage but I love the DIY stuff if I can do it

a pal came round today to listen where the noise was coming from, it turns out the noise only apears when the car is under load being driven, the car also makes the noise when its in gear and I bring the revs up to 2k before lifting the clutch slightly.

the noise is definitley coming from behind the cambelt cover, anyone have any ideas? and why only at 2k when the engine is under load?

As I stated in an earlier post, my noise went after a cam and aux belt change at ford. They said it wasn't timed correctly on the VCT.

Much apreciated Melinamotor for the info

Looks like more expense on this bloody car, I'm going to name it "Money" because it eats it continously. Have to say in all the years I have been driving and I have had many fords I have never had a car with so many problems crop up one after another. I'm now seriousely considering moving it on thinking is it worth the expense when you look what they are going for these days.

it doesn't seem like its only my car either
