I joined this Puma some time ago, but this is the first time i have posted.
My Puma 1.7 16 valve registered 21/12/2000 is in need of a cambelt change. the garage i took it to cannot get the belt. I have looked online for the kit i.e. belt, tensioner etc and there are some. I am reluctant to buy without some advice. Has any one bought from any of these sites and were the parts supplied ok. The mileage is 35,000 and the belt change is long overdue. Any help Please.

I used Gates timing belt, pulley etc when I did mine, seem to have a good reputation and plenty of stockists.
You will be seriously lucky to find a 1.7 Gates K035433XS Powergrip Timing Belt Kit. If you do, please post the link on here.

Similar state with the LuK 3-piece Clutch Kit for the 1.7 (although other makes are available).

If anyone is intending to keep their 1.7 Puma for the next few years, I would suggest they order a Timing Belt Kit from Mark Hadfield on my link above, as it's rumoured over on eBay even Dayco may be stopping supplying the UK.

Hi.
I have always used Gates. for over 18 years on about six occasions. They were the original suppliers to Ford, apparently.
I have been told by several mechanics, that Gates belts are not the quality they used to be.
One guy had one break after a few days and had to replace a complete engine at his expense, he no longer does cambelt changes, he'd been using Gates belts for over 30 years and like most of us regarded them as the best available.

YOG,

These 2 sites list they have stock and both allowed me to put one in the basket (obviously I’ve not tried checkout).

I’ve heard the same as you. Our belt done a year ago being Gates. Key thing is also that a good mechanic does the work so the belt lasts better as it should do. Their warranty should be better than it is.

The mechanic I use won't fit a Gates cambelt. He got one and thought it did not look good and so he returned it. This is why I have been waiting for the Hunter. Hope he will get one delivered soon!

I managed to get an old stock Gates kit for my Quantum 2+2, the guy who fitted it said that it was fine, he did a really thorough job, on my last Quantum a so called Ford specialist did a terrible job and charged nearly 3 times more !

Any of you that are storing belt kits or buying old stock, have you taken into account the shelf life of a belt due to the rubber deteriorating as it does when fitted to a car?

That's something I've thought about as well, luckily the one I purchased for my Quantum was Ok, the guy fitting it checked it and it was fine.

I should like to thank all those who replied to my request regarding Cambelt change. It has been a great help with my decisions. I will update as to what progress I make. Thank you all again.
