Does anyone know of a 4wd gearbox that would bolt straight up to the duratec 2.0 HE keeping it transversly mounted?
I toyed with the idea of adapting an evo box to fit but it would need an adapter plate in the middle so i dont think there would be space

Good thinking, will see if i can find 1. You would think they should take a good bit of power/torque too coming from a fairly big car. Cheers for the help :)

You can also get the Focus ST engine in that car so I imagine the gearbox will handle some grunt

IIRC, mazda 6 of first generation had 4x4 version in production coupled with 2.3 NA engine. Volvo V50 also had awd version and that was built on Mk2 focus base...

Now that is usefull info as the kuga boxes and transfer boxer are expensive for something that is likely to disintegrate fairly quickly.

Kuga ISNT 4 wheel drive....its FRONT wheel drive with a tiny, pathetic amount of power that goes to the rear wheels...i wouldnt bother...buy a 4x4 panda! same setup!

Mondeo gear is mainly fwd too, rs2000 4x4 is 60% rwd, VERY similar to the evo setup but transfer boxes are a little smaller and weaker

dunno too much about the newer stuff

The Kuga does increase to 50/50 if the front starts to lose traction though as I understand?

Just been reading about the rs2000 4x4, transfer box can take up to 300bhp, would be ok to start with but i hope to end up with more than that eventually

Can u fit an mtx75 to a duratec w/o too much bother?
Might be worth just going for the evo option n get an adapter plate made up as they are good for 600bhp iirc and and they arent all that expensive compared to kuga box etc

As mentioned above, the mazda 6 MPS box will fit, it's the same as an MPS 3 but with a transfer box. Or you can use a mondeo MTX75 box with a V6 jag transfer box. That was something I was looking into. The Jag V6 uses an MTX75 box, but bell housing is different, so you would have to use the mk3 mondeo or focus mk 2 box.

I'm now running an MTX75 box, not too much hassle fitting, just some re working of the chassis leg, and new gear linkage and rear mount.

the kuga is 100% fwd, and about 60% fwd even when the viscous diff kicks in to the rear...its to save on emissions :-(

rs2000 is permanent 4wd, permanent 60% torque to the rear :) but im only banking on 250bhp from mine...with an oil cooler to the transfer diff (im not going for more than 250 as the plan is to build my v6 4x4 puma over the next 5 years then buy a 380bhp aston!)

jag v6....i bet you a shiney pound coin you could take the bell housing off that gearbox and put a ford one one!!!! oooh, now theres an idea...!

Do you have any pics of what you have done to the chassis leg?

I have a mk3 mondeo box that came with the engine, so i could hopefully just swap the bellhousing from that to the jag box then n see how that goes.

I need to make a project thread soon i think

Unfortunately i didnt take any pics of the chassis leg, as when i was doing it, it was pouring down with snow and FREEZING!! I just wanted to get it done so didnt take the time to take any pics. Here is a pic of how it was done though. The black dashed lines are where the structure is now, the red is how it is originally

Its almost as if you cut the section out and inverted it. Strength shouldnt be compramised as ive actually got more horizontal strength there now then before, and its just in front of the strut turrets, so the only things its supporting is the front bumper, wings and lights. I angled the reinforcing piece i put in so it gives good vertical strength and should be the same impact resistance from the front.

Im not sure if you can bolt the Mondeo bell housing to the Jag box, although they are pretty much the same box internals, there are 2 issues i had with focus RS box and the mondeo box. The main issue is the bolt pattern is different. Look at the following pic.

Look at the right hand side of both the boxes. The mondeo box on the right is straight, but the focus box isnt. The top holes will mostly line up, but the bottom ones wont. Im not 100% certain on the V6 jag box, but i think the pattern might be the same as the focus rather then the mondeo, but youd have to check. The next thing thats easy enough to get over is the bearing on the focus box output shaft is a different angle, only by a few degrees, so to look at it you cant really tell, but when you try and put the bell housing on, it doesnt quite fit. If you arent very experienced with gearboxes it might catch you out.

I think the Jag transfer box is pretty much the same as the RS2000 transfer box, it certainly looks the same. Would be nice to have the Jag box too as its a 6 speed IIRC.

damn it! theres me thinking ford did one thing right! but no, two mtx boxes...that are different!!

just googled some pics...transfer box on a jag looks more like the mondeo than the escort. check with warren but im sure the mondeo and jag ones rotate a different way to the escort, mondeo one is 60%ish power to the FRONT so imagine jag is too

i remember there was a reason i went for the slightly older and more fragile escort kit...think it might have been this

Now you mention it, that sounds more like it, I was trying to think of a 4wd mondeo but my mind went blank. It's the mondeo and jag that are the same.

yep, seen a few but think ford only made a 1000ish...

similar set up to the escorts rs2000 but the transfer box looks bigger (longer!?), im sure warren told me it spins the other way and has less torque to the rear, plus the rear suspension etc is cheap nasty steel sections compared to the really nice escorts ali subframe and steel rod type links.

cant wait to get mine started, got a new house with a drive etc now. next up is a new gate and a car port then i can crack on :)

i think your all going wrong way about it
take a puma cut the shell of the car then add that to a range rover puma propa 4x4 lol
