The other day I set off in the early hours for a trip to France. The run from Norfolk to Poole was done in light traffic.

As you can see I managed to average 70mph, and that included the non-motorway bits at both ends and the 50mph section of the M25 so you can see that I wasn't exactly pootling.

And yet got a good 31+ mpg

With the price of premium unleaded every little helps (To coin a phrase)
 
That's not bad at all. I'm only averaging 36mpg in the Mini.
 
if you averaged 70mph then someone was speeding at some points :) anything below 70mph would bring the average down.

I tried to maintain a steady 80-85 mph indicated on the Motorway sections (M25 SPECS monitored zone apart). Several hours at that speed does push the average up quite nicely and gives you a bit of a cushion for when you drop off the fast roads and thread your way through the back streets of Poole headed for the ferry terminal
