Gear whine

Is this a characteristic of the Puma? I seem to remember (years ago) driving Mk4/5 Fiestas and thinking the gearbox was a bit noisy, symptomatic of an inexpensive car I suppose.

Mine seems to whine in all gears (diff) until I can't hear it any more due to the wind/road noise... I'm telling myself it's fine and that's what rally cars do so it's cool! (Yes I've checked and topped up the gear oil level).

If it whines in all gears, I would suggest it's got worn bearings on either the input or output shaft(s).
But please wait for others to put in some suggestions too as this may be caused by something else...

Mine whines in 1st only. I have no idea if its normal until I try this spare box I have.

Theoretically these gearboxes shouldn't wine at all.

Mine had a wine so I took it to a local company to have it rebuilt. They advised that almost all of the bearings on the inside were showing signs of wear and said it would be advisable to replace all of them, which they did.

Unfortunately I haven't actually fitted the gearbox to see what it's like.
