Evenin' all! :)

Has anyone ever owned a Coupe (02 shape onwards)?

I really fancied one after the blue Puma died but then the fat cat came up for sale so I snapped that up instead.

Style wise I think they're beautiful cars with very little changes needed to them.
De-tango the front lights & side repeaters and a tasteful set of wheels and I'd be happy.

1.6ltr - I can only think that it's likely to be underpowered compared to the Puma due to it's bigger size body & smaller engine?
The 2.0ltr is probably much more suited to it's size / weight?

I've never driven one so keen to here you thoughts on their handling etc?

Example of what I was looking at

I have worked with a guy who has one in silver... same as the style/shape in your link. His was the V6 engine, think it was a 2.5 litre.

I agree it is a lovely looking car, and has a very comfortable interior. But for all its V6 lump it cannot stick with the Puma on fun roads, and was not able to out pace the Puma's acceleration between the bendy bits. However I am sure it has a higher top speed for motorway cruising and such like.*

Apart from seeing him/his car in my rear-view mirror I have only been a passenger in his, never driven it myself. The V6 version was very heavy on fuel use too - though that is to be expected as even without the V6 it seemed a heavy car.

My verdict - looks lovely, well-equipped, but the sporty looks are not matched with pace and handling. {Of course there is a chance he is a crap driver though I don't think that is case, we both work 'in' our cars and rapid driving plays a role in the work}.

*on private runways of course - neither cars top speed is ever applicable on the public highways, officer.

Received opinion is that it is a very 'dead' and uninvolving drive.

If that is the general comparison, then going from a Puma to it would be pretty horrid.

But you know the answer, you need to drive one yourself and make a judgement.

My sister has a gen2 and loves it. I was thinking about getting one a couple of weeks ago but couldn't find a decent one. Once I finish college I will most likely take the plunge and get a gen3. A really good site to find out more is: http://www.hyundaicoupeclub.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; a member called Scout is most likely the best person to ask about them. If you do go on the site look out for me (same username)

Ah you've all pretty much confirmed my suspicions about it then.

It's a sheep in wolfs clothing, has the sporty looks but no real "X" factor to make it worth choosing over say... a 1.8 Celica with VVT?

I'm not looking at getting rid of the fat cat for at least another 12 months anyway but it's always nice to hear the other side etc. :)

Yeah Jamie had one. Then the gearbox went on it. The garage who screwed the gearbox fitted a new one FOC in the end and then Jamie sent it on it's way shortly afterwards for an RX8. Not sure how that's going but I haven't seen him grumbling on here or FB so must be ok but I know he said the Puma was much better.

His was the 2.7 and as dead as a doornail as far as I can remember....lol.

Let me re the Fat Cat matey-

Might be intrested in that if I ahve the funds for it

I wouldn't have either, but if I had to make a decision I'd go with the Celica

I was looking at them before the Puma fell into my lap.

The 2.0SE is the one to go for, the 2.7V6 didn't justify the extra fuel consumption etc, except by being a little bit smoother.

1.6 is underpowered, and is the only one to come without a dual exhaust, which looks ace!

Aside from the obvious flaw of it being an MG, has anyone ever tried the TF?

I was sat in one today having a mooch when I was at the garage gettin mine sorted.
Interior felt really nicely built and gear change really solid & firm, didn't get to give it a blast out though. :(

I realise it would be another step towards a hair dressers car but meh, I don't care! :p

Good couple of 'F' links here mate

Good guides those Neil, cheers! :)

The head gasket seems to be the common problem with them so providing you buy one with full service history or just get it re-built with the stronger / improved gasket kit there doesn't "seem" to be much else that goes wrong with them.

This blue hardtop version caught my eye:

and this yummy gun metal colour:

I'd take either. I've always had a soft spot for the 'F', as well as a lot of Rover products - hence the website :)

ive been in an mgf,my uncle owns 1 of the last 1's made by rover, was a nice ride and the engine was very good,it was the 1.8 vvt
i was originaly going for an older mgf when i was changing my zafira the other year, took it for a drive and hated it,but landed up with a puma instead,
check the tyres there should be 2 different sizes fitted and the rear should be the wider 1s if same size is fitted then beware, also the metal coolant pipes that run from front to rear have a tendency to corrode and leak,if you do buy 1 make this the 1st job you do to it then you wont have bhg issues hopefully, allow atleast £600 for hg job,if youve never had a rover engine apart you will see why the head bolt kit alone costs alot off money they go right throught the block, also if buying a late mg,there have been issues where the parts bin has dried up when they fitted abs sensors, you might come across 1 with just 3 fitted but the ecu has been programed to run on the 3 and not 4,also check the roof is a good fit aswell, have alook on the mg sites for the mgf/tf there was plenty of info on there about what to look for,but thats all i can remember for now :eek:k:

The K-Series engine is an absouloute nightmare. See the 1.8 Landrover Freelander. There is a place in Hastings or Eastbourne that fit a multi-layred head (6 layers I think). They also can put a tester in the expansion tank fitted to an alarm to let you know when the coolant is running low.
