Hi all,

As some of you may have read in my project thread I was suffering with a bit of a judder, nothing too bad, but enough to annoy me. Well I think I've sussed out where it's coming from.

First a description of what's a do. The car drives perfectly when accelerating, cruising, cornering etc but when I brake moderatley there is a big vibration through the steering and brake pedal and a loud knocking sound from the rear end, drumming in time with the wheel rotation. It's been getting worse over the last wee while so yesterday I did some reading and convinced myself I'd nackered my front discs/pads however last night I was doing about 60 and decided to eliminate the rear brakes as the problem so I pulled on the handbrake a little. Low and behold, loads of vibration, knocking and kick-back!

So I think the rear brakes are the culprits but does anyone have any idea what it could be? Also can anyone recommend a garage in Aberdeen, had a trusted guy out in Ellon but I've moved into the city and I'm not sure when I'll manage to head out there again.

Thanks in advance!

A likely cause for this then is that your rear brake shoes and drums are misaligned meaning that there is not even contact when braking resulting in the vibration you're experiencing.

Some reasons for this are warped brake drums or worn/loose wheel bearings.

It's worthwhile getting them sorted by a reputable place near you.

Good stuff, cheers.

Would the wheel bearings not make a noise more often? I did think of warped/damaged drums but I didn't think that was possible!

Wheel bearings should be making noise just about all of the time - usually a droning noise which coinsides with the wheel movement :eek:k:

Aye, I'm thinking drum/shoes, it's more of a thumping, drumming, knocking noise rather than a hum.
