Private plates

Hi folks, when I doubt ask the experts, can you transfer a private plate to a car that is on a sorn and with no mot, or would you need to buy it and then put it on retention??, I'm not sure about the rules and thought it best to ask first, thanks in advance.

I'm fairly sure you can't take a plate off of a car with no MOT hence I'd imagine it'd be the same deal the other way around however I don't know for sure.

If you need it quickly then retention is definitely the safest way to make sure you grab it :grin:

Or phone the DVLA, the information on the website doesn't seem to mention that it has to be valid just that it's available for inspection and that both vehicles must be of a type that requires an MOT
