Hi everyone,

Taking my car in to my local Fraud dealer next wednesday for its (2 month overdue) major service.

Been taking my car there for a couple of years now, so I do trust them (ish). I'm even on first name terms with the service manager there - top bloke!

He knows how much I spend there and knows I'll more often than not take it there if anything needs doing so he sometimes does me a "deal."

Also, got a 20% off voucher for the service and anything else it needs (includes parts and labour). So getting the service for £180, so pretty good for a main dealer full service, and anything else it needs will be a bit cheaper :)

Taking it in for a major service, brake fluid change and for a small oil leak. Also the ABS/TC lights are on and they only fixed it about 3 months ago, so will be refusing to pay for this. Hmm, let's see if they spot the seeping radiator too...

Just can't wait to get it all sorted :D

£180 for a main dealer is pretty good :eek:k:

Let us know how you get on :)

Right, where do I start? I've been so stressed these past few days.

Arrived at Fraud at 7:30 on wednesday morning. Forgot the locking wheel nut keys. So had to go all the way home and back again (and by this time the traffic was horrendous). Got the car booked in and they talked me through what they were going to do.

Full service (I told them not to touch the air filter)
ABS/TC lights sorted
Oil leaks sorted

They also had the cambelt down because it was a 100,000 mile service. The conversation went like this:

Me: "Why have you put the cambelt down?"
Numpty: "Because it's due on the 100,000 mile service."
Me: "Well it was done 2 1/2 years ago. Oh, and it's every 5 years or 80,000 miles by the way."
Numpty: "Oh, well we just check the Ford website."

They also had it done for a "wash & vac" - no thanks, I'll do that myself.

So I got call that afternoon saying that the ABS this time was the nearside sensor (got the offside one repaired in june), hence it wasn't covered by the warranty. The oil leak was coming from the rocker cover gasket. This was changed last september so slightly out of the warranty period. But for £18, just do it. Then they said that there is another oil leak coming from the nearside rear shock absorber. So I've been on the phone to Pumabuild (where I had it fitted last january). They said they'll ring me back but I'm still waiting.

So I asked him about the total price. Expecting the worst, I was told £300. I was so chuffed! So all that work, plus brake fluid, plus major service. Bargain of the century. But the parts weren't in stock so I had to wait until thursday (yesterday). Fair enough - for that price I can't grumble too much. Oh, and he told me that they'd checked and pressure tested the radiator and everything was ok. So that was a relief.

Then I woke up startled yesterday morning thinking...well what if the service price (£180) is on top of that £300. And a quick phone call confirmed my suspicions. But the service manager told me he'd "sort me something out." So reassured, I carried on with my day.

About 1 o'clock, another phone call to say it was ready. Total price should have been £560 but with my discounts and my "deal" I got it all for £450. So not too bad. I was out the area so I told them I'd pick it up late afternoon. Sure enough I got there at 5 via a lift from the missus, and had a look at what they had done. All seemed to be in order when I asked them what oil they used, as it didn't specify on the invoice/worksheet.

The conversation went like this:

Me: "By the way, what oil did you use?"
Numpty: "5W30 fully synthetic." (he then pointed to a cheap unknown brand bottle on the desk).
Me: "It's supposed to be ford semi-synthetic. It's not supposed to have anything else."
Numpty: "Well what we've put in is a better quality oil. We put it in all the new cars."
Me: "No disrespect, but I know more about that engine than you do and I know what's supposed to go in it. It's had the same oil for 9 years, and I'm not changing it because you tell me to. It's a very sensitive engine (then technical talk followed with puzzled them somewhat), and when I come to top it up, that'll mean that I'm mixing oils. It's a 9 year old car, not a "57" plate Focus!"
Numpty: "Honestly, it'll be fine. We've used it for ages now.We put that in your car last year"
Me: "No you didn't, and I've got the receipt to prove it. I'm not paying all that money for the wrong oil to be stuffing up my engine. I'm not happy."

So they told me they'd sort it out tomorrow (friday/today). So I had to ask me missus to come back for me, which she wasn't exactly overjoyed about. Then just as we got out of town, I had a phone call. Telling me that they'd made a mistake and how they don't use fully synthetic oil at all, and that the oil I wanted was actually the oil they had put in. A bit suspicious, I asked them if it was just a ploy to get me to pay and collect the car. But they reassured me that it wasn't. So now happy, and not wanting to p*ss the missus off anymore or get stuck in traffic, I decided to run back through town to collect my car.

So I paid and they pulled it round the front for me. While they did this, I was just browsing throught the service book, which they had updated, and also the break down of parts they'd used. Hmm, no spark plugs or fuel filter???

The conversation went a bit like this:

Me: "Have the spark plugs and fuel filter been changed? It has had a full/major service..."
Numpty: "Er, let me have a look....no."

So by this time, I'd had enough. So I told them to ring me in the morning and sort me something out. And sure enough, I did get a call at 8 o'clock this morning. So I'm taking it back this afternoon to get the plugs and filter sorted.

So in summary, what a nightmare!!! I mean, on a major service how can you not change the spark plugs?!?! Just as I had started to trust this garage, they've let me down. And just the way they have no idea what they're going on about. I'm really starting to have doubts about taking my car there now. Paying that kind of money, and taking it to a main dealer, you expect the best. I know I get special discounts there and the price is sometimes rounded down, but still. And I've still got the suspension issue to sort out with Pumabuild. I think I might do that while I'm waiting this afternoon.

Anyways, thought I'd let you know how I got on...

(Longest post ever on a forum by the way!!!)

Bloody hell Andy - that sounds like a right stress inducer!

I'm starting to doubt the intelligence and competance of most garages now, especially after my conversation I had with "Ford Rapid-Fit" the other day on a similar linie to your oil questions:

It's a sad day when you have to ask before someone does work on your cars exactly what grade, technical specs are going to be applied to parts. They are supposed to be the experts afterall and you pay a premium for taking your pride and joy there. The service interval lack of knowledge would lead me to just not go back coupled with the oil balls up.

Think I'll just buy the bits - the bits I want on the car - and do the bloody service myself. At least that way I'll know what's on it, and that it's been done correctly.

Jaysus!!! Im just gonna service my car myself its fully serviced and stamped up to now but after a car is 8/9 years old I dont think it matters whether the book is stamped or not. I could be wrong but it doesnt matter to me that much. Anyone agree?

Depends how soon you plan on letting her go I guess.

At the end of the day overall condition is far more important than the service history at this age imo

Just keep receipts etc works just as well :)

Thanks for the comments guys.

Well I took it back on friday for the plugs and fuel filter. They got the car in the workshop as soon as I got there so that was good. Then whilst they were changing the plugs, they noticed that the rocker cover gasket was leaking again.

So I shouted at them - that the car had only done about 12 mile since it was fitted and it was leaking already!!! However, at least they told me I guess, and they needed to keep the car overnight (the part wasn't in stock) to sort it out. So I asked what guarantee do I have that another 12 miles later it won't go again? And the service manager gave me his word. Hmm, we'll see. Also, they wanted to put some dye in the oil that helps them to trace and sort out oil leaks more easily. I was a bit dubious about it, but to be fair, it did sound ok to me. I wouldn't have let them if I wasn't ok with it. So they gave me a courtesy car (brand new Ford Ka - love them!) and I picked my car up on saturday morning.

So all sorted - it feels much better to drive now. Especially with no lights on the dash. I know it's a lot of money spent, but when you drive it away and it feels better and you know everythings ok, it makes it worthwhile.

So just got to sort that shock out now. Should be getting a call from Pumabuild today...

'experts'..........ROFL!!!!!!!!! most people who become mechanics were the types id kick out of my classroom!!!!!! no way those muppets are touching my car!!!!!!!!!!!

(obviously i have met some awesome ones!!! i live near an aston martin specialist but so far theyv only turned me down!!! - they stick to what they know and i cant really fault that....)

andy; buy a haynes manual mate. everything on that list but the cam belt and timing is diy.

good luck with pumabuild; i have had (and read about) some major nightmares there. but i have to be fair and say many people have been happy with them...... whatever you do dont complain about them publicly!!!!!!!

i dont bother with ticking the service book (binned it ages ago!) what youv got to do is 'know' your car; any 'good' buyer will pick up on that & appreciate it much more than 'trained monkies charging more than solicitors ooops i mean main dealers' looking after it....

also; from the other side (iv worked in a garage) theres only so many places to start when trying a problem....so if you had a recurring one & went to different garages theyd all be charging you to change the same thing as its the first 'on the list' etc. if you look after the car yourself you have a much better idea of what it really could be...and cars arent that hard to figure out....

as for the rocker cover it can be a sod!!! the nuts need to be as tight as possible..... (but there as hard as cheese and can knacker themselves and the stud; which happens to hold the camshaft in too!!!!! dont go there!) try a washer under the nut but be careful how you tighten it!!!!

or come over to school one day & il sort it..... (id need time to get the bits; i only do jobs properly & itd be stainless nuts & washers.....which i might not have spares lying around)

I think even I'd be tempted to do a service myself if that's the level of competence at main dealers.

When Ollie sorted out my ABS sensor and front shocks, he spotted my engine had a leak from the corner of the rocker cover gasket. £16 for the part from Ford, and we fitted it ourselves. Well, Dal did really. ;) It was a bit fiddly getting it in place, but I've not had any problems with it since.

It really is worth getting to know how to service your own car these days.

Nothing hard about servicing cars...

I did mine myself, parts came to £46..
Got an ex mechanic to change the timing belt, cost me £215 including belt kit, new water pump. and labour...

No one takes any notice whether you have your booked stamped or not...

My wee S reg goes like a dream now...( or my g/f's anyway) mines is the MX5
( once I get a pic posted)

What was your mileage and how old was your car when you took it in for service?

The Ford Etis lists plug changes as every 4 years/40,000 miles.

Mileage is 68,000 and the cars nearly 10 years old.

It may well do, but I specifically asked for a major/full service as it's been 3 years since it's last one.

Unfortunately, many Ford Dealers will do a Full/Major service without changing the plugs unless you specifically ask for them to be done, because they are listed as 4 year/40,000 miles. Same with Brake Fluid, A/C Filter etc.

The only way to be 100% certain that they do all that you require, is to ask what they intend to do, then stipulate anything else you want specifically doing.
