To keep the Miltek or not...

...that is the question.

As some of you may know, I spent the last couple of days having my wallet hoovered at Pumabuild, and conversation with Alan inevitably got onto why I had a Miltek fitted. Unsurprisingly, he doesn't rate them too highly.

I'm unsure whether to keep mine and go for the full Pumabuild replica system instead. The main reason I'm thinking of changing is because my exhaust manifold really is on it's last legs and needs changing. To replace the manifold and cat so I have a complete Miltek system is around £700ish at Pumaspeed.

Problem is, the system hangs quite low on an FRP, and the design doesn't allow for a heat shield, which also worries me.

Any FRP owners got a full Miltek system? Also, if I were to remove mine, how much do you reckon I could sell it for?

Cheers for any replies :)

Well, knowing how low the full system hangs on my standard Puma, I would maybe be worried about your FRP Neil.

I think Elvin's red FRP might have the full system on, but could be wrong there...

I've got a full Milltek system on my standard 1.7, no issues with it hanging too low, it's no different to the FRPs I've looked at

Unsurprising, as Pumabuild doesn't sell Milltek systems. It's not in his best interests to tell you to fit a system where he's not going to be on the receiving end of your cash.

If you had gone to Pumaspeed instead, Tony would have given you a similar opinion of Piper systems.

You're doing the right thing in canvassing opinions. See what the opinions are on the RPOC, speak to people you know and trust for their opinions. I would also try and speak to TopGear and Tremona too if you can.

I don't think it'll matter too much which system you have as far as performance is conercerned, there isn't much actual difference between Piper and Milltek.

Don't forget, you don't have to have a full system of all the same make, you can mix and match, but it depends if you want to. Whether it hangs lower or not, I can't say, but I'm always sceptical of any mechanic slagging off something when he doesn't sell it. It's too suspicious. Alan cannot, by nature of his business, have an impartial view.

Nail. Head. Hit.

Milltek does the job just as well if not better than a piper. He's just after work i would say.

Aiden has a full miltek.

I've just been out the front of the house to have a look and he has the heat shield fitted beind the manifold.

He's not got the shield down the centre or backbox and this must have been like this since Chris owned the car previously.

I wouldn't bother replacing the whole system if it were me and you are happy with what you've got currently.

Do you mean the heatshield around the manifold or cat back part Neil?

Around the manifold - there is a heatshield all the way from the cat back.

Any decent auto engineer / mechanic would be able to fabricate you one if you wanted around the exhaust manifold.

Personally - nowt between a Piper and Milltek 421 so get whichever one suits your needs.

sorry bout the late entry to this thread but instead of fitting a heat shield which obviously sometimes have clearance issues etc! why not heat wrap it?? keeps the heat out the engine bay and i've heard improves performance slightly too!! ( weather thats true or not i don't know)

Fast ford are a big fan of these wraps, meant to be quite good but tricky to fit. Can do your entire engine in it.

if you do go the wrap route, just be careful you don't end up with the same situation as my dad with his kit car using the 1.6 zetec SE engine.

He'd spent a fair bit of time wrapping the custom manifold up to the collector, and I don't know what went wrong but within a couple of minutes of running the engine he had some nice flames from the wrap  It promptly got removed and never replaced

How about ceramic coating to reduce under bonnet temps? Having the bike exhaust done with that soon and it's supposed to be pretty good (not too pricey either, depending on your budget of course :) )

There is defi a heat-shield round 165's miltek..

miltek manifolds r very good quality.. i cant comment on the piper.. but its miltek all the way for me.

Chris you must have had a fondle of my Piper manifold when you had it off of 0201 :D

I have an early Milltek manifold on my standard car, it has fixings for the heat shield, though I don't have one fitted.

You mention that your manifold is knackered, but what about your standard cat?

I am running a Milltek manifold, with standard FRP mid section and cat, and a Piper back box. When the standard mid section dies, I plan to have the cat cut out and fitted to a new stainless centre section, assuming I can find someone to sell me one.

Aren't both the latest Piper and Milltek manifolds interchangeable with OE? Also, doesn't the latest Milltek manifold sit a bit higher?

lol. well i might av had a little fondle but ... to put heat shield on while engine is in car = a right pain in the bum !
