Hi,

I'm having a couple of new problems with my puma...

its a 1.7 and i love it.

Though now when i put my foot down when the revs are low and get a rattle from the engine.

I have never heard this before and its starting to worry me abit.

For example... i was going up a hill in 4th gear and i was just doing less than 30mph so i put my foot down and got this rattle, it only rattle while the accelerator was pressed as soon as i took it off the noise stopped.

Any ideas what this can be then!!!

Has it only just started doing it?

Sounds like mine did when I put 95 RON fuel in it (Mines mapped for 99 - pinked with 95 in it)

Did you fill up last time somewhere different to the norm? Hopefully it's just some manky fuel.

I think my puma isnt remapped... i use both super and standard petrol...
It runs ok... just when the revs are low and i put my foot down i get this rattle/pinking noise.

Just filled up with standard tesco fuel.

To be honest i reckon i've had this noise for a while now but not as bad as its become.

Anything else it could be!!!

Or could it be a trip to the garage for a check-up!!!

I wouldn't touch Tesco petrol to start with. For a quick potential fix, run the fuel tank as low as you dare, and put some Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate in, and see if it makes any difference.

If not... could be anything rattling: heatshield, gearbox...

It did it again tonight on the way home, only at low speeds and in to high a gear for the revs eg, 30mph in 4th gear going up a steep hill with my foot hard down!!!

Mine was doing that until I had the gearbox changed, it's done it maybe once or twice since then, so I can't even say if that was the cause or not.

My advice would be to speak to a garage/mechanic that you trust not to rip you off.

Right... i've got some feedback on your suggestions... cherrie and dal...

Remember i used a full tank of standard tesco petrol last week, and my puma developed a low down rattle and sweet fa power!!!

I took your advice unboard, run the tank as low as i dare take it... i boy it was low!

Filled up with shell v-power brimmed it!!!

And now no rattle or 'pinking' all seems fine again

Does this mean that my ecu has had a super unleaded remap... as i've used standard petrol before without having this rattle!!!

Any more ideas!!!

Most likely just a bit of petrol that has been diluted with some condensated water or something at the petrol station.

Even if you have been mapped for super, you can still run normal most of the time.

I filled up a couple of times with normal petrol on th eway up to Scotland and back and didn't do any harm. Just started to pink a bit. A tank of super and all was fine.

If I were you, fill up for a couple of tanks with non supermarket petrol and see if it comes back before going for the extra expense of super stuff that you might not be needing.

Aaahhh!!! Mine does this!

Remember a while back I thought it was the splitter coming loose??
Nope, not that...
Pips still rattles. A bbrrrrrrdudududdddddd noise like a short ruler twanging off a desk.

Yep - I have no idea. Heatsheild maybe, but Steve thinks wheel arch lining (I think its too soft). Doesnt matter what gear im in - its when accelerating hard in 2nd onwards & up. ABS antilock maybe?? Or just the acceleration vibrating the chassis?

Puzzling!

Well at least it seems there is no underlying problems with the puma... huge relief.

I thought it could be the bottom end going... or the clutch... or the gear box, but at least it seems a poor tank of fuel can cause such a problem
