Exhaust flexi pipe

I had trouble a short while ago with the flange joint between the flexi pipe and the centre section.

I drilled one bolt out and although it all fits back together ok, I'm not happy with having to space the other nut out with washers to get it to do up tight.

It looks like the cat and the flexi are all one piece, so is it a viable option to cut the flexi from the cat, and replace with something like this....? Flexi pipe ...or this: Repair pipe
 
Yes, Ford do/used to do them (around £80, IIRC) - see this link for diagram:
