Afternoon all,

I've been doing a bit of thinking lately which has proven to be very dangerous.

Basically what i want to do is SORN the puma and just have it for track time so i can mod it any way i please...

Now the first immediate thought i had was Turbo. I realise they are quite an expensive modification but very satisfying at the same time. My brother is a resonably well experienced race mechanic and is also very willing to help construct a turbo engined car.

He has thus far suggested something like a Garrett T3 turbo running about 1bar and lowering the CR to about 7:1. Hopefully would see it to the otherside of 200bhp. He is able to construct some bits of exhaust pipe for me so i can save a little money there but my main question really is what would break first with all the added torque?

Are the standard pistons enough to deal with 1bar and would the ib5 handle a turbo? I don't think it will so could perhaps replace it with the MTX75 from a 2.0 focus or something.

Obviously there is a lot of homework to be done!

Toby runs circa 270bhp in his turbo'd puma through an IB5, and has been for quite a while now.

Track use will put any engine under more strain as you're more likely to sit in the middle gears at high revs. Not a risk that's exclusive to a Puma with a turbo on the engine.

*bites tongue very hard on the issue of stressing engines*

:twisted:

~Good to know the ib5 can hack it. I think before taking it anywhere near a track we will do what stress testing we can. I'm going to try and do this on a tight budget by buying as many used items as i can - stripping them down and replacing whatever may be used or on it's way out. I know ultimately it wont be cheap but i'm hoping to achieve around 200bhp which will make the Puma very hard to catch! MY brother may have just found an intercooler that i can have :D He has one in his garage from a Lancia Delta Integrale, it's quite small but very deep so may do the job and save good money. Will likely get some cosworth refurb'd injectors and as said something along the lines of a Garrett T3 and try and use as many Ford bits as possible (FRS, Sierras etc.). This could be very fun :twisted:

the first thing i would do is check the whole chassis for weakness and then poly bush everything then replace all your pipes and reduce all your weight + the usual extras braces etc giving you the best body to stick ur sick turbo powered beast in....

good luck mate! make sure you project thread it!

Yeah it's gonna be stripped with a rear strut brace and some extra weld on the chassis to strengthen it. fortunately my brother has an engine cradle type thing so we can get the engine out and build onto it as we go. I can hopefully recycle the old exhaust manifold. Should be quite an interesting project if i can get the money to get started with! (fingers crossed for a bonus this year :))

You would probably be better with an original manifold that goes from 4-1 in one stage, and close to the head, rather than your Piper where the 4-2-1 doesn't actually happen until the very bottom.

Yeah my brother said that we would have to do away with the very nice and shiny (not to mention expensive) piper manifold!

sounds cool, im not a huge fan of turbos but go for it!!!
def talk to turby
bit of seam welding would be good, plus as before get it handling solid & your going to need bigger brakes.... mondeo v6 300mm....
make sure theres plenty of heat shielding (ask warren!!!! his set on fire!!!)
id get a spare engine & box on standby just in case as the bc (older ib5) box is known to be weak, ib5 SEEMS good so far tho. def not enough room for an mtx without chopping chassis. get a 1.4 box (frp ratios) & fit an lsd. spare engine incase of issues with bearing shells or nikasil liners
should be plenty of room for an intercooler with the aircon rad out of the way....
bit tight to mount the turbo behind the engine?
might be ok with ordinary pistons at low boost....not sure if 1psi is low enough. id worry about the con rods (see what turbys running) as they tend to break!

Thanks :) There's alot to take into account and there aren't a great deal of examples. We have contemplated fitting an LSD if the price is right or repairing one from an S2 cosworth or something like that. Can always remove the entire aircon system to save weight and make some room. I need to find out about lowering the CR - i have seen 2-3mm plates for 1.8/2.0 Foci not sure if they can be fettled to fit nor how much it will lower the CR. Standard is 10.5:1 isn't it? Bro said we want to lower it to 7:1.

Brakes will defintely need to be upped. Does anyone know if Focus calipers fit onto a puma with the right carrier? I have some Ferodo DS2500 pads with would go lovely with a turbo car.

Standard Focus brakes don't use a carrier, thus are no good to you. Your best bet is either;

Fiesta ST / Mondeo Mk1/2 V6/4x4 / Escort / Sierra 4x4 Cosworth / Sierra 2WD Cosworth (these are all 278mm, all except Fiesta ST need a bit of work to make them fit)

Focus ST170 / Mondeo Mk3 (these are 300mm, either needs to use ST170 300mm discs, Mondeo calipers are cheaper and more readly available)

Ok thanks - looks like i will have to try sell the pads off then :(

I tried to find this turby guy on the user list but nothing? can someone point me in the right direction? I have a few questions!

Turby doesn't often frequent this forum and is known by another alias here.

Your best bet is getting hold of him on rpoc.co.uk or puma people

He might only be a member on pumapeople.

Also there is some good info on brakes, etc. in the Wiki over there.
