Hi, i own a 1.7 vct and my current exhaust came on the car when i bought it. Its aftermarket though i'm not sure what brand it is... it could be a cheap one, i think its cat back, but i cant see where it stops.

Anyway, its really really loud and is now starting to grate on me as you cant drive anywhere without it screaming all the time and it pops and bangs all the time aswell.

So i'm looking at a possible replacement either standard or aftermarket, what are my options then, i would pay no more than £200-£300, so what are my choices, that price includes fitting aswell.

Would i see a noticable drop in performance with an original for one!!!

So thanks for reading, and i await your help muchly.

Red Dwarf is about to start on Dave!!!

The popping and banging might mean you also have an aftermarket manifold on aswel? Could be worth a thorough check underneath to be sure

If you can get a picture of it up - we might be able to see where your starting from!

1st thoughts are that if you get a Milltek, you can drive them so they don't sound aftermarket at all if you keep it sensible. It's just an octave or two lower.

From the pictures you posted a while back, it's hard to tell what you've got on there. If you can get a photo the tip and backbox at least, we might be some way to identifying it.

With the amount of pops and bangs you say you're getting, I would say that you've got a full s/s system there, as just a cat-back system tends to be quieter. Plus it depends on the system you've got, and what you've got will affect your options to replace.

If you've got a full system, and want to replace it with something quieter, £200-£300 is probably going to limit you to refitting a standard exhaust, though you should be able to sell on whatever s/s one you've got on there.

A Milltek cat-back exhaust is about £300-£350 now, then the same again each for a cat and manifold, so easily a grand for a s/s system.

First step is to identify what you've got at the moment though. :eek:k:

I was driving my "Second" Puma the other week as its my local garage courtesy car
I fitted a "Blue Flame" stainless system to that when I had it.
I had forgotten just how nice an exhaust it was and quiet after driving the FRP.
Just gives a deep exhaust note with a very slight burble on the over run.
Unlike the FRP which pops and bangs.

It was under £300 delivered from Ebay a few years ago, but it's stainless and still going strong.

pops and bangs are the best bit of an aftermarket exhaust I think! Call me young and foolish if you like lol.

As Dal said, Milltek is the quietest option, Piper is more basey and noticeable. Look no further than Milltek cat back if you want very subtle sound and a quality exhaust.

Interestingly, I just had a custom SS back box on my Ibiza, but that popped loads on the overrun. Anyone explain??

Probably it was overfuelling, and the unburnt petrol was blowing up in the last exhaust box..

is that bad? Would it have affected performance or anything? Mind, it did only have 60bhp to start with bless it.

Popping (unburt fuel in the exhaust system) not good for the catalytic convertor...FRP CAT has no issues dealing with it though :)

Haha well I guess most of you already know my opinion on exhausts...

Judging by the fact its very loud you probably won't fancy going to something thats pretty much just as burbly and bangy, like a full Milltek, but I guess the cat-back itself might be a bit quieter than mine...

just Milltek cat back is far quieter than your set up Jamie.

As said, personal preference, but bangs and pops for me :D
