Ignition Barrel Woes

Basically, my ignition barrel is wrecked and I need to replace mine.

Unfortunately - I can't get the key into the lock deep enough to move it to position 1.

What are my options? Do I have to drill out the old lock or is there some way I can force the lock into position 1?

I have ordered a new lock set, so I don't need this lock intact

One way I have had to do this in the past is to chisel the small part of the sleeve which keeps the tab from sliding out. not idea of course
