instrument cluster differences

Hi there, the instrument cluster in my Escort failed and i'm after a digital Puma one as it's unpleasant this jumping speedo needle and cable failure.
I've read there is a slight difference between the instrument clusters and i'm hoping you can help me answering some questions.
Are these the ones used before and after January '99 as i read in another thread?
Some Fiestas were fitted with digital instrument clusters too. Are they the same as these two or there is a third, maybe fourth version of it?
I've read that the later Pumas had GEM unit and the instrument cluster used to get some info from it - is this true and if one has instrument cluster like this will he be able to use it just getting the info from other place or it's necessary to have the GEM unit in order to work?
== For example - if the temperature reading comes from the GEM unit, but if i dont have one i can get the info from the sensor directly==
In other words if i have instrument cluster which was was fitted in Puma with GEM will i be able to use it in the Escort like in many guides around the web.

Do you have the old style instruments in the escort,analogue mileage ,if so then you need read about the analogue to digital conversion in the how to guides.only downside is the fuel gauge reads the opposite way,full is empty and empty is full,also plenty of guides on the escort forums regarding this conversion.

Yes i have the old mechanical type. I've read the conversion guide many times and i'm looking after a set of instrument cluster+cable plug+fuel level sender unit from a single Puma in order to be sure the set is working as it should.
I was asking if i would run into problems with one of the two types or it just doesnt matter which will i get and both will work? On a side note is there any benefit in using particular one of the two types (maybe the one after January '99), like maybe more warning LEDs say for traction etc., diagnostic options or enything else?
