Hi!

I bought a key from ebay, the seller said it would fit my ford puma 98 modell but after trying several times to prgramm the key I think he has fooled me :-( or I am a jurk.
Just cant get it to work. I ve read something on the net that the old puma uses infared and the new uses wireless ... probably it.

the programming says:

3 Button Key
Turn the ignition switch from position I to position II at least four times in six seconds.

Turn the ignition switch to position I.
The central security module is now in the learning mode.
Press and hold one of the buttons on the remote key until a chime sounds. This indicates a new key code has successfully received.

After each successful programming, another 10 second learning mode is automatically entered, up to a maximum of four times.
To program additional keys, repeat step 5.
The system will leave the learning mode after the ignition switch is turned to position III, or if no new key is programmed during the 10 seconds, or if four remote keys have been programmed

That is the correct method for RF keys. Does your car have a dark coloured receiver by the interior lamp? If it does, then you have IR, not RF.

Also, while RF keys were available in both 3 button (round, as above) and two button (square), the IR keys were only available in two button (square).

Also, you will know if the car has successfully entered learn mode as the rear fog lamp warning light will come on.

Don't forget, this is just to program the remote locking, NOT the immobiliser function. i.e. even if you can get this key to lock/unlock, you need to do another proceedure with two existing keys that both currently start the car.

To program the immobiliser;

Key 1 - pos 0 - pos 2 - pos 0
Key 2 - pos 0 - pos 2 - pos 0
New key - pos 0 - pos 2 - pos 0

Should be job done. Watch the alarm light by the clock, can't recall exactly what it does, but on solid is good, off is good, flashing rapidly is bad.

Hope this helps!

I have a red bulb ( think thats the alarm) its near by the front window.
Have a red indicator with the clock, but it seem to flash all the time.

I had a two buttom key before.

I think its IR, since the old key has a red indikator (reminds me of the old tv remote controll)

If you had a two button key, with a visible bulb poking through the end, along with a receiver by the clock, then there is no chance that a three button will operate the locking.

Referring to this thread: http://www.projectpuma.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=912" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The first is Infra Red, the second is Radio controlled. The two are not interchangeable without changing A LOT of wiring/ecu wtc in the car.

As above, the reprogramming method is for the central/remote locking of the doors only. To program another key to start the car, you need at least two keys that already start the car, if you do not have these, you will need to go to a Ford garage to get another key, and they will charge you a fairly large amount for it: approx £80 is charged by UK Ford garages.

You might be able to program the key to start the car, but a 1998 car will have the IR central locking, so you can't program it to unlock the car remotely
