Hi all,

i need immediate help with my puma, after an mot failure.

It failed because the exhuast was too loud (maybe becuse its a sports exhaust) I quote 'exhaust noise is clearly in excess of that emitted by a similar vehicle fitted with a standard silencer in average condition'

Advice needed... are they playing up or are are they for real as many people have stainless steel aftermarket exhausts.

A couple of other things but they werent a problem!!!

Ow and one more thing, about crap ford service, i dropped my car off at 9.30am this morning did not get the car back until after 5.30 even though i booked my mot first thing over a month ago.

And the receptionist didnt give a shit, she said its a fail and that will be £53.10. Didnt even go through the reasons, she was more interested in finishing.

So help on the zorst please

You've a 'sports' exhaust.

That's a meaningless term.

If what you mean is you have an exhaust that is louder than permitted under the law you've taken a chance and not got away with it. Similar things happen to people who fit illegal tints.

But if it just happens to be a bit louder than your average Puma, and you took it to a Ford dealer who actually knows what a Puma normally sounds like, you may get away with taking it to a non-Ford dealer MOT Bay.

So you either fix it by fitting an approved silencer / exhaust, or you punt another £53 trying it somewhere else.

I can't think of any other options bar finding somebody who will issue you a noise certificate after testing your car and finding it complies.

I'm not sure which aftermarket zorst it is... it was on the car when i purchased the car. Its loudish but most other cars around sound no quieter than mine, its cat-back i think. i'm taking it to a exhaust specialist tomorrow to see what they think, and my mot was at a ford dealer!!!

Can they fit a new silencer without buying a new exhaust!!!

This link explains that a car cant fail an mot due to exhaust noise as there is no law... so if i'm right tc harrisons are screwing me over as they failed me for it!!!

Somebody at work mentioned to me that there's a new law coming out that states that if a car has had a louder exhaust fitted it will fail an MOT!!

Just done a quick search & found this

"EXHAUST NOISE

What is the criteria for failing cars with modified exhaust systems producing more noise than the standard system? Do MOT testers have access to noise meters? - Micky
No, it is a matter for the Tester to decide whether or not the vehicle is producing excessive noise - MOTT. "

found it on http://www.motester.co.uk/mot-qanda3.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But then look at the Puma. An FRP is louder than a normal 1.7 as standard, yet it's still a 1.7 Puma.

I think it'll be a rule that can be enforced for extreme cases, not if you've an aftermarket exhaust from a decent manufacturer.

My Puma got an advisory notice yesterday for having a big bore exhaust on (Milltek full system with sports cat). I spoke to John - my trusted mechanic - who said that the government are considering bringing out a law to ban all noisy aftermarket exhausts, but that sounds extremely vague to me.

If it's descrecionary like actionman said then maybe it was just that garage, probably worth taking somewhere else mate, as red suggested.

I heard that a while back too, hopefully its rubbish!

I've booked it elsewhere as i spoke to them and they couldn't believe that ford failed my mot.

They said that it was ok to them so its booked in on thursday for another MOT.

For a truly impartial MOT, I wouldn't have gone to Harrison's. I would have gone to Alan's Test Centre on Wetmore Road. As they don't do any of the repairs themselves, just the MOT, they're less likely to fail the car on one something they're hoping you might use them to replace.

The trouble with an MOT is that the majority of it is the personal judgement of the tester. One might fail you on something that another tester would just give you an advisory.

You should be ok there. I've only ever taken one car there for an MOT, and that failed... but that was an old J plate escort 1.3, so wasn't really bothered, and part ex'd it for my first XR3i. ;)

Let us know how you get on. :eek:k:

Yeah i will do, i really like using rinkway now, they are really honest and are very prrofessional and wont mess you around... the owner Simon is one of the nicest blokes around!!!

I would be totally fcuked as ive got a 4-2-1 manifold, decat pipe system with 2 sport boxes and thats it!
My exhaust is loud, but not really on tickover or low revs, it screams, pops & spits like a bastard when you hit about 3k though!
My mates a mot examiner i will ask him if a car can fail on noise alone.

Garage looking for work. My mate took his Ka to ATS Euromaster against my advice, and they had him failing on this, that, and the other. Stuff like the wipers, and of course, they charged him £20 per wiper to replace them, as you get a free re-test if they do the work............

I reckon your better off if you take your car to a MOT Tester who just does mot's and nother else. so they wont piss you around, they arent after extra cash from ripping you off and making up fails.
