Ok so I've swapped out my dead 1.6 for a replacement one from a breakers, got it in the car, all connected up, and its turning over fine but not starting, any ideas welcome!

is it getting fuel? and are there sparks coming from the leads?

I'd start there :)

Always a good idea to check the firing order on the coil pack too.
Double check all the wires you have removed just one wire not connected right or not pushed in could cause the problem.
Did you use your spark plugs or just used the ones left in the engine.

There's no spark coming no, there's power getting to the coil but nothing happening. Fuel pump is working fine as well.

Don't think the spark plugs got changed over - was going to make sure it worked before swapping the plugs over etc.

crank/camshaft sensor?? The crank sensor was the problem when I fitted a 2l silvertop in an escort once! Possibly you might have the same problem here? It turns over consistently but it just wont engage!

agree, the case of no spark, usualy is either a defective coil pack, or the crank sensor. ofcource, it only takes one loos conector to cause trouble, so I would double check all the plugs anyway just in case,

it is hard to get the plug leads wrong, but not imposible :)

crank sensor was swapped last night and made no difference, as was cam sensor :S

well the coil was sapped off the old engine, which started to move it just before the engine came out so should be fine...?

Here is a wild card how about the fuel cut off switch in the foot well.

Check for bad earth to the engine, chafed wires on the coil connector(can fry ECU), so check ECU.
Also what killed engine no1?

engine no 1 was burning a ridiculous amount of oil - the guy that's been helping fit this one thinks it was the garage that did the cam belt for me, got it wrong and messed it up. supposedly my dads getting hold of a diagnostics box of tricks tonight or tomorrow to see if thatll help

usualy, when something's wrong in these cases, it's usualy someting, where somone's been :) grate news that it was just a plug :)
