Doesn't matter whether it's got a blower on or not, the 1.8D lump in a Puma will still go straight on at corners and bends. :lol:
 
Anyway.. wasn't there a thread posted by someone a few weeks back advertising a Puma diesel conversion for sale? I seem to recall it having some coal burning lump from the 80s in it too :twisted: . Anyone know the post I'm on about?

It's back on EBay again, this time it will sell! At the time of writing, it's up to £200 with nine bids (not a fortune I know, but it's still selling)!

Flying Scotsman, I've had two Mk3 Fiesta's with the early version of the 1.8 normally aspirated diesel engine. Old, but reliable technology (I was changing the timing belts at 40k), will never set the roads alight with its performance (I know that was not the original aim), but they were cheap to maintain, cheap to run and will now be cheap to buy for your project (should you give it a go)!

The new listing is even funnier than the first one - he's now included a video "demonstrating" that the diesel conversion is a good job done and the car still works, and his proves this by...... turning the radio on and operating the electric window switch :lol: . Well that's me convinced then.. :-D

I think you're being a little over dramatic here, from what I can find online the 1.6 TDCi weighs 85kg more, and the 1.8D is 110kg more than a 1.7 Zetec S engine.

that's about the weight of a decent sized passanger (13 - 17st), or a small passanger and a full tank of fuel!
does your puma career straight on at every bend when you have a passanger on board or have just visited the garage?


Why do people have to be so negative and give the op grief about a project they're not interested in, if you don't like the idea move on and let the op carry on with his project in peace. :)
 
i can see the appeal of the diesel lump, eg ecomony, running costs, tax etc, but dont think that you will get all the appeals of the puma, with all the benefits of the diesel, apart from looks of course you will retain that.

fitting the diesel to a puma will generally negate its handling, and engine characteristics, and on that basis you may aswell just buy that engine in the fiesta which it came. Unless of course you are really really wanting to keep the looks of the puma, only reason to do it
 
Is the gearbox going to be changed with the transplant then or not? If not then it is a complete waste of time doing as the engine will be doing 4k at 70 in 5th and scoffing as much fuel as the standard petrol lump. :D

I doubt it. For many of the people who do them, these kind of projects are like a disease.
Some people like ready-made meals, or to eat out, others will prefer to get their own ingredients
and do the work themselves. A puma diesel makes as much sense to me as custard on spaghetti bolognese.

But I salute the indefatigability...
 
would be a boring world if we all thought the same, i wouldnt fancy a diesel engine in a car, i would in a van,camper,tractor,pick up ect, puma pick up would be cool :)

Some really snide but funny comments..

If im doing this... IF.... Its just to see what it turns out like... You're all guessing what happens... but you don't know for sure... Im just playing... The same way i'm throwing a turbo in my petrol Puma... Im playing... same reason im building a S1600... Im playing...

If i do it an it turns out rubbish, then it turns out rubbish.... but as long as a get £1 more than the one on ebay sells for them i made a better one lol.
 
Sorry if im dragging up an old post but I think its a great idea. In fact im considering it myself.
Currently rolling around in a mk5 1.8td fiesta which is getting rather tatty but the engine is a goodun, already fitted rad and intercooler from a mk3 Ashtray (i had one laying around after an engine swap job) and thats helped things no end.
The fez has got to the point where rear bushes, fromt shocks and wishbones all need replacing, whereas my "spare" puma has full polybushes, coilovers, leather etc but is screaming for its cambelt (its sitting in my workshop till i can be bothered.
My thoughts were to save money and just swap the engine over one weekend, no expenditure, just 2 full days graft would see it done. A decat and manual pump swap while im at it will see it go better too.
Thats purely for ease of fitment however, as for other engines, as Ive found the mondeo v6 fits with relative ease, ive previously measured, the 2.0/2.2 TDCi engines will also fit straight in. Only real issue is the wiring. Probably best to use focus/mondeo loom complete.
The 1.4/1.6 dv4/dv6 engines, whilst good for what they are, i wouldnt go to the trouble of fitting. Management alone would be a nightmare and they just aren't reliable enough. Mainly due to poor oilway design they clog up fast, killing turbos and engines alike.
