Hi guys.

Just back from 2 weeks away in Cromarty (that beyond Inverness for those of you going "where")

4 adults, 1 small child, hell of a lot of luggage all piled into the family barge (2 litre passat est) and despite having all this weight, virtually no ground clearance and over 132,000 miles under her belt she achieved an average of 44 mpg over the 2 weeks.
Most of this was at 60/65mph on the out and back journey with the holiday bits being done at 30/40 mph on narrow twisty roads, quite impressed.

Only problem we had was reversing off of a very small ferry, one bystander told me there was absolutely no clearance left between the rear bumper and the concrete slipway....so glad I was taking it real slow

Problem is now what do we replace her with?

That's good going!

Can be a problem when you've an "old dependable" car; the thought of having something else as good is quite hard! Stick with it. :eek:k:

Agreed. My Subaru Forester is just shy of 134k miles now (still on its original clutch). However, she has felt a bit flat recently and fumes enter the cabin when you're at a standstill. Yesterday I was quoted around £800 for replacing the turbo up pipe. Usually, it'd be time to trade in for something else, but modern cars just don't do it for me and I can't find anything to replace it that is as tough, 4WD and quick.

Ultimately, I've found a mobile Subaru specialist who can weld the pipe for a fraction of the cost and has offered to pick the car up from work and leave me a car to use while they work on it. I think I'll just carry on running it until it becomes utterly unfixable.

Stick with what you know!

That's nothing  I have a 2.3D Sierra estate .Had it from new.Engine has had nothing done to it.Only thing that's been replaced is an alternator at 175 k miles. Its had one relay replaced, and apart from brakes exhausts, batteries etc it's had nothing .Even the clutch is original and is now approaching 1/4 of a million miles. The best though was my Nissan engined Fairway cab. When I sold it the engine and auto box had done 600,000 miles and the engine had only needed 2 alternators and 2 water pumps.Gearbox had never had an oil change .Guy bought it from me and drove it to Germany the next day without any problems. When there were fuel shortages years ago I ran it on a mix of cooking oil, paraffin petrol mix.

Ok so have replaced the Passat with..............

Looked at various 4x4's but as in reality we only need a 4x4 for like 2 days a year even living where we do so they were all dismissed (loved a dark blue Legacy estate mind but was a wee bit thirsty for us)

Also quite taken by a Suzuki 4X thingy but bit on the small side, 6 seat Honda CRV? with 3 seats front and rear was interesting, Mondeo?...very hard to find a low mileage estate, similar problem with Focus estates but then.......sitting at a local garage we found a one owner, low mileage, low price, burnt orange coloured.........???

Pictures on Sunday

That VW Van that wheeler dealers couldn't sell?????
Edd actually bought that one Barry. Ran it a while then sold it on to one of the crew. Ended up in a pompy scrappers after the engine caught fire.

True story ;)

Hi Rob
Wasn't that the Aero "bubbles " one. As far as I remember at the end of the orange ones show (they wanted 10K for it) it hadn't sold but toerag Brewer said that an Army Colonel/Major was going to have it when he came back from an overseas posting?????
Barry

Didn't realize they had done another one Barry? Ill have to have a look for that, must have missed it!

Rob.

Hi Rob
They did a half decent job of that one, the bubbles one was crap. Ed might be a decent mechanic but he is totally devoid of taste :)

You are of course correct....one owner, full service history, less than 60,000 on the clock..1.6 so cheaper road tax than the Passat, drives superb, very tight, very quiet and more importantly very good for my wife's sore back, may have to fit a tow bar as load capacity is a little smaller than the VW but love the colour, washed it this morning, polish and wax is next on list.
Got not too bad a deal from the garage, £200 off as no trade-in then they stripped and cleaned the brakes, replaced front discs/pads, oil and filter change as well.......it was serviced last month and had timing belt/water pump etc done, MOT till June 2017....well pleased

Nice car. I used to have a 2.0 diesel C-Max when the kids were small and I had a long commute. It was a really reliable & solid workhorse and the boot space was huge for pushchairs etc. Only thing that broke in 6 years of heavy use was the alternator. Plus the turbo embarrassed quite a few boy racers at the traffic lights. Enjoy!

Ahh you have upset "carlos" now (my daughter named it!) :)

As for the view, have to admit to loving it too, had the camera been facing the other way or come to think of it, any way at all the view is the same, nearest (only) house is quarter mile away, hill to the rear of cottage, open farm land all other directions
