Just a quick question,

Can you still get the parts to overhaul the 1700 Engine?

I think mine is a bit noisy yet everyone has said it seems ok

It is only when cold

Has it had regular oil chamges, whit the right oil? And how long is it since the last one?

It has had oil changes every year until I bought it in May last year. Oil gets changed every 4 months since then with Ford oil.

It has had a Full Service history also from Ford

HMMM, should be fine then :) most engiens, specialy older once, can be a little noicy when Cold :)

I hope so. I might buy a compression tester and check the compression on it

A compresion test wont realy tel you anything if the engien is runnimg good, noices are generay cleranse isues, as the metal expamds when warming up, it's not to far fetched that either one or more of the pistons ore walves are knocking about slightly until they Reach theyr propper running temperatures :)

my car was a 2 lady owner, with full service history and its now on 77k. its rattled for a while and recently got worse. when changing the timing belt i realised theres excessive play in the crank and that clearly the trust bearings have worn/failed. my engine runs fine but is essentially scrap. they can fail even with proper maintenance. one cause of crank walk like mine can be starting the engine with the clutch depressed, as it puts load on the thrust bearings while theres little to no oil pressure. a pretty simple thing!

could be worth getting underneath and checking how much play you have on the crank pulley in and out, i think the tollerance is something like 0.2-0.3mm, so it shouldnt even be noticable.

and to answer the question about rebuild parts, yes, you can get them, there are some on ebay but eurocarparts do them, i have an account but they worked out cheaper with euro.

I think that is all what is needed for overhaul of an engine?

Plus gaskets, of course

Well the donor car I've bought turned out to have a very very slight noise, so it's gonna get rebuilt. Euro car parts stock bearings but not rings, there isn't even a part number for them which means they e never supplied a set according to my mate there, same with oil pump. They do a full engine gasket set though which comes with every single gasket and seal on the engine. Crank seals, stem seals, throttle body etc etc. for the bearings and gasket set it was about £130+vat, but I have an account. Retail will be slightly higher but Im happy to buy them for people and post if required. I'm still awaiting a cost on the pump and rings.

Just for everyone's info :D

bit of a gamble i'd say buying ANY of these... all the proper parts originally fitted to the engine are all available from FORD ..pistons complete with new rings are fairly reasonable money etc etc...

the Valve stem seals on that link look nothing like the original ones, i'd sooner pay a little more to know for sure iv'e definitely got the right ones personally...

Could you be more specific in terms of prices, please? I was just pointing out that parts are obtainable…
But I do know for a fact that Goetze is NOT producing piston rings for this engine and in my market the Ford prices are prohibitive high, I'm affraid
