I found it a little more difficult to get my radio out than most how-tos describe it, few pictures and videos of how it all worked here.

Out with the radio, the clips are pushed out like so

Connects2 kit goes in the hole, cable routes under the steering column to the area behind the fuse box.

Push the fuse box in a bit, and you can pull the iPod cable out it.

I cut a hole in the roof of the cubby hole with a stanley knife

Through which the iPod cable pulls

quite neatly, virtually impossible to accidentally pull through the hole. Rest here until you need it.

I'm tempted to do a raised stand for my iPhone in that hole, probably using a putty of some sort.

Does this charge the iPod/iPhone as well?

It does indeed. I have mine in a cheapo suck-on holder from Amazon
