Front shocks top mount question

My new Bilsteins are fitted but I've got this gap between the upper top mount and the body. Is that correct? Should there be fresh air under the upper top mount like this?

There should be a small gap, ~ 5mm is normal.

I measured the gap and cut the mount down so to prevent damage to the unit on rebound, nothing to stop the unit "fretting".
