Yup..

So will your local garage owner :-(

As for the blacktop difference, I assume its something in the electronics (ECU wanting different info on different wires)

Im thinking about doing this mod too. Im gonna look for a throttle body now.

Hi again and interested in the discussion on the Mondeo Throttle body.
I just bought one from a local scrappy. He can say it is defo from a Mondeo but not 100% sure which model. He has offered to give me my money back if it is the wrong one - very decent chap so nothing to lose - took it to try on the car.

I have not had time to change them over yet however I had a close look at mine tonight and disconnected the air intake hose to check it fitted on the Mondeo one.

The hose fits perfectly and the electrical plug fits in perfect as well however - on the inlet side it looks to be exactly the same diameter and shape as the Standard 1.7 Puma TB that is on the car.
Should it be the same - should the 2.0L Mondeo one not be bigger?

On the Mondeo TB the diameter is smaller on the outlet side than on the inlet side. The dimensions - approx- measured with a tape are: Inside Diameter- Inlet side 59mm / outlet side 50mm (inside diameter).

To save me the hassle of taking the TB off the car - can anybody tell me what the standard Puma TB dimensions are - Inside diameter on the inlet and outlet sides?

What diameter is the 2.0L Mondeo TB?

Anybody with the dimensions or thoughts on what the size should be I would love to hear from before spend time pulling it off the car.

Also there is an almost readable sticker on both TBs that says not to clean the inside surface as it is finished with some kind of coating.

The TB I just bought is a bit crappy looking inside and their appears to be some white deposits around where the butterfly closes. The butterfly itself has a little black muck on it. Any idea how to clean this up without damaging the TB and does it actually need to be cleaned up?
Thanks for your thoughts, views, opinions etc!

All the best

Im pretty sure the 2.0l Zetec Silvertop throttle body is a 55mm bore.
I have compared the 1.7 Puma and the 1.8 Mondy version side by side. They are exactly the same size (but very slightly different shaped casting)

As for fuel. My mate did this conversion on his 1.8 Escort. he reports significantly higher fuel usage (He does have a heavy right foot!)

Hi Thanks for your thoughts. I bought a TB from a scrappy and it appears to fit the Puma. It is 59mm bore at the inlet side and 50mm bore at the outlet. I took the air hose off and measured my Puma inlet which is also 59mm bore. So rather than go to all the hassle (Cause I am rubbish at mechanics) of taking the TB off to see what size the other side of my TB is I thought someone on this site must know what the answer is so I'll ask there

If anybody knows please reply - it could save me a big waste of time taking my TB off.

All the best

It sounds like you have the 1.8 Mondy TB there Snowcol.
It is exactly the same spec as the Puma one, keep your spanners dry for now.

I had a spare Puma one which I have polished up and fitted. That is all you could do with the one you have.
Keep searching though. 2.0 silvertop ones do pop up on fleabay from time to time. Prices can be anything from £50+..

Hi Again. I had a look at the TB on my Puma and you are right trublusti - It is exactly the same as I have fitted. It did occur to me though that to get any advantage from a bigger throttle body that the entry to the manifold that the TB bolts up against would need to be enlarge to the same size as the outlet side of the TB. That looks like a difficult job. Any body got experience of doing that? How did you do it? How long did it take with the manifold still fitted to the car?

Thanks for your help

You can get away with a HSS milling tool in a drill, search Ebay. Use some engineering blue to mark out how much needs to be removed then rough out the new hole. When you near the size swop to a finer tool , to get a smooth the surface. It can be done on the car but it's far safer to take the in let off.

Here are some photos of the required throttle body.

This is a throttle body off a MK3 Fiesta RS1800 (bit of a rare thing now) but has the same 55mm butterfly as the Mondeo 2 litre MK1. The manifold bolt spacings are apprx 76 x 60 mm and it takes a 70mm ID air hose to the MAF.
I do have a Mondeo 2 litre throttle body on my Westy but that stays at my Mothers at the moment but the next time I'm up there I will take photos and measurements.

Hey - Thanks for the photos. How hard is it to get the manifold off? I assume new gaskets required when putting it back together as well. I would consider taking it off if that made enlarging the inlet simpler - and safer.
Thanks again

Sos CM can't comment on any of those questions as I am yet to do the mod but if as mentioned in the post above that the mouth of the manifold needs opening up I would definitely take it off to avoid getting any swarf in the engine.
