I have done a few oil changes over the last 40 odd years, including about 6 on my Puma, but for the last two, I have suffered a slow drip from the sump plug. For both I have used a new sump plug, and tightened it as "normal".

I did a bit of searching on the forum, found a post with torque setting, and lots of posts about very difficult to remove sump plugs, and what spanner size fits, etc (1/2 in, if you buy a new one, then you can try your spanners before you get under the car!).

So, anyone know if Ford have changed spec on the sump plug seal, or if when they do an oil change, they really tighten up the plug to make sure it does not weep?

Are you using the earlier sump plug with the copper washer, or the later with the "rubber"washer?

Yog,

I have used the one with the integral rubber washer, 1013938 purchased at great expense from my local Ford Dealership!

Next time I empty the sump, I will have to have a good look at the mating face. There is no indication on the plug I removed for the oil change that there is problem with the sump mating face, but as this is the second plug where it has occurred, then that may be the problem.

I never replaced a sump plug on the Escort MkIs that I had, or the Capris, and don't remember any leaks. (at least, not from the sump plug!)

I use the new style, without any leaking problems. The "rubber" does compress, so I fit a new one each time:

Yog,

Puma went for MOT last week (>105000miles, passed with no advisories!) at my very local, very friendly garage, and he put on a further new sump plug.... so far so good.

At the next oil change I will find out how tight he torqued it up !

Puma is also a Thunder, additionally with some thanks to this website.....grey, with internal boot release, 2nd (LEDs) boot light, heated washer jets (and washer fluid), glove box light, Recaro seats, Eibachs.

Im having the same problem at the moment. Oil only changed a few weeks ago but slow drip. New plug ordered so will see if that hopefully sorts the problem
