    1.7 w/out AC as standard?

Track spec? I call it poverty spec :-)

    poor brakes

Yes, huge improvement over the 260mm standard setup. I used pagid discs and ebc ultimax pads. They compare well to my Octavia with pagid discs and ebc redstuff pads. The puma being a fair bit lighter I didn't see the need for an aggressive pad for fast road use.

    winter wheels and tyres

Or the right wheels without spacers :-) Our thunder has a 3mm spacer in with the jack etc, the spare is a prop so God knows what became of the original spare. Does anyone know if a thunder had a steel spare or a matching alloy when new? Guessing a wheel could have been damaged and replaced...

    winter wheels and tyres

Optional alloy and standard (i think) on the puma black Looks like a split rim with a row of fake rivets round the rim. Mondeo came on them as well but with a different offset. If you have 240 or 260mm disc brakes any standard wheel will do. You need thunder, f1 or 9 spoke Millie type...

Fat fingers! Same as you -f1's and 195/50/15 Doh! Should learn to proof read....

    winter wheels and tyres

Watch the offset. They are normally around the et40 mark. I got f2 style split rims and just banged 195/55/15 on. I needed this rim to clear the st150 calipers. It is ace with the correct rubber on. Don't go for ditchfinder rubber. Hankook icept work well on the puma.

    the end is near

The Alfa is here and the puma has gone off for MOT before my sister has it. Miss the wee ford already. Too many bloody buttons in the Alfa too! :-)

    the end is near

Thanks. Went to sign the docs this morning. Got to PDI it then we take delivery on Friday. We went for the metallic red distinctive trim, plenty of kit and pretty rapid to boot. I didn't want to like it and had my heart set on a fiesta ST. the Alfa was way better than I expected and the Ford...

    the end is near

In a weeks time our ownership of a rather nice January 2002 moon dust silver thunder will come to an end. Its been an ace car, totally reliable and awesome fun to drive. It's making way for a new Alfa 1.4 TCT Mito, despite being a Ford man thru and thru both my Mrs and I fell for the little...

FORD RACING PUMA: SPOTTED (on Pistonheads feature)

True. That said, pistonheads does get some right wallys commenting on stuff A regular fave is the slagging haldex 4x4 systems get by the RWD driving 'gods' spectacularly missing the point of the haldex system in the first place. The FRP article was a breath of fresh air in so much as the...

A lot of love on the gassing station comments too :-)

    Puma Thunder Register

MT51 ZND, silver 1.7 73K miles, excellent condition, soon to be owned by my sister.

    Modern Puma equivalent.

Having just done the test drive rollercoaster, I can say with some confidence the swift sport is as close to the puma in driving terms as you will get. Good body control a fine handling chassis and a willing NA engine, brakes not as good as an ST 150 equipped puma, gear change not as slick...

    Changing car

The deal on the Alfa has been done. The Ford won't be completely out of my life, my sister is having it, I get to look after it for her!

    Changing car

Thanks for the offer, it's a bit of a trek though! Our local dealer is motorvouge in Northampton, seem very good. Back in next Friday to try and bash out a deal.

    Changing car

We went out in the 140 bhp distinctive mito with flappy paddle box. I didn't want to like it, but, it was bloody ace! Very nice place to be. Reasonably practical for us as a young family, went well, handled and stopped very well. Perfectly mannered road car. They are doing 0% finance until end...

    Changing car

We are in the process of looking for an eventual successor to the wee puma. Got a good list of warm and hot hatches. I really fancy a new fiesta st, will test drive one soon but my Mrs gets the final say. Every time we test drive something it seems like cheating on the puma! Off to try a mito...

sump removal and refit and sump plug problem

Failing that, stick it back on and drain the oil using a vacuum sump pump.

sump removal and refit and sump plug problem

A nut can be welded to the knackered head of the sump plug. If you can't do that or find someone to do it for you replace the sump. Ian G on here breaks pumas so may have a sump from a shagged motor.

    spark plugs

NGK all the way for me too.
