Hello again, i was planning next year to buy the alcon front brake package - discs, pads, calipers, hoses mainly because i thought having a spare set of alcons maybe beneficial whilst having a set off for cleaning each time round?

Currently my front discs are feeling pretty worn and now my pads and shims have turned up i wouldlike to get some discs before fitting. I was looking at the cheaper alternatives on puma speed The machined ford items for £169.99 Has anyone used these or can direct me to any other cheaper alternatives for the time being?

Thanks

Mike

I wouldn't waste your money on them! Hi Spec do a two part disc as a replacement to the Alcon and is roughly about £320 a set but each time after you need to change discs the cost is only £160.

I was also looking at the Puma speed discs as I get a bit of a pulse through the pedal, has anyone tried them and what are the downsides?

downsides are they don't fit properly..lol

machined to fit in the caliper but you can't machine the correct offset can you.. :?

The Alcon discs are pretty awesome i'd stick with them if you like the 'proper' FRP braking.. The bell and rotors work ok too, at least they are the correct fit... I sell/fit both..

I would like to get a set of calipers cleaned and overhauled, plus a new pair of discs too...the alcon discs seem excessive...I have fitted st 200 to one of my cars and they work much better than the old discs and calipers of a standard unit. is there no altrnative that is just as good, seems very odd that the alcon ones are the best choice these days.,..

they are almost 15 year old technology, so though maybe newer designs would have improved things...I dont know the answer, I just want my old girl to stop good, should I keep the std set-up change, the discs, or pads or change the whole lot...if you have any advice i am all ears...

I have heard that a Mitsubishi disk will work but you have to have a wheel stud drilled to make it fit on the four stud pattern! But with this and the puma speed ones I don't know anyone who's has tried them!.

I know el dude is the master of all that is Alcon and trust what he says, but has anyone tried these disc it would be great to know!

The brake setup is fantastic quality stuff, my advice would b to preserve it...

The calipers take a bit of care and attention, as far as the discs go, while you can still get them, i'd stick with them, they're awesome when new!.. There are still a few sets left between myself and P.Build...

The bell and rotor system is the only decent alternative imo... no saving of money but theoretically should save 'some' money in the long run...wouldn't have thought much tho, as i'm pretty sure you'll be skimming the Alcons a couple more times than the bolt on rotors...

Pretty sure i know the disc you mean... it's a heavy duty disc that PB used to sell a few years back...

they were nothing less than awful on the FRP...lol the pedal feel was terrible and you needed washers to space the caliper back around 3mm... :|

okay so is it sa simple job to service them yourself or is it a more specialist job...the car is off road for a few days at moment would like to get them done now...if thats the way to go...

I'd say if you havn't done them before, it's always handy to watch somone else first..

then you can decide if you want to give them a go yourself next time... it's when you break a bridge pipe and you havn't got a spare things get interesting..

what area you in..?

Iv'e had a fair few travel more than that..  I'm right near Junc 24 M1

It's definatly worth doing a proper caliper service before fitting new pads and discs...

It's a fussy setup, you just can't get away with cutting any corners...

i will be passing on sunday, perhaps i could drop them in and pick them up on Monday as I go past again...am off to see my ss1600 puma...
